Georgia Gov. Brian
Kemp (R) announced
that the state will begin
a work-for-Medicaid
program, called Georgia
Pathways, in July 2023.
The program will
require low-income
individuals to complete
80 hours of work or vol
unteering in order to
qualify for Medicaid
coverage.
The program was first
proposed and approved
during the Trump
administration, along
with several other states
that received approval to
establish work require
ments for Medicaid cov
erage. The Biden
administration revoked
approval of all state
work requirements for
Medicaid in 2021.

have the constitutional
authority to block the
program. The U.S.
District Court for the
Southern District of
Georgia ruled in favor
of Georgia on August
19, 2022, which autho
rized the state to move
forward with the imple
mentation of the pro
gram. The Biden admin-
istration has not
appealed the district
court’s decision as of
November 22, 2022.
Proponents argue that
the program will aid in
expanding Medicaid by
making individuals who
meet the work require
ments eligible for cover
age. Andrew Isenhour, a
spokesperson for the
governor, said, “It is
important to note that
we are only adding peo

expand Medicaid to oth-
erwise ineligible
Georgians who satisfy
the work, job training,

requirements,” accord
ing to Clayton News
Daily.
Opponents of the pro
gram argue that the
work requirement will
create barriers for peo
ple who are low-
income. The executive
director of Georgians
for a Healthy Future,
Laura Colbert, said,
“Full-time caregivers,
people with mental
health conditions or
substance use disorders,
and people unable to
work but who have not
yet qualified for disabil
ity coverage would find
it hard to qualify,”
according to The Atlanta
Journal-Constitution.
OBITS
Obituaries
Albert “Van” Van
Hemelryck
November 15, 2022
Albert “Van” Van
Hemelryck was called
home by the Lord on
November 15, 2022, nine
years to the day after his
wife of 53 years, Mary Jane
(Lar). His wallet contained
a worn wedding picture he
carried with him for past 62
years.
Van was raised on the
family farm in Hysham, MT,
the son of and Peter and
Clarice (DeCock) Van
Hemelryck, both of whom
emigrated from Belgium.
There he developed a love
for hunting, fishing, and
working on all things
mechanical. The Korean
War compelled him to fol
low in his father’s footsteps,
a WWI hero, and he joined
the Air Force in 1950, serv
ing on a Sabre jet crew sta
tioned in England. After the
military, Van graduated from
THE Montana State
University in Agricultural
Economics and eventually
settled in Miles City, MT
where he managed the
Farm Credit Services
branch. He also owned a
40-acre farm where he and
his family spent many
happy hours. After an
attempt at retirement failed,
Van returned to work for the
Farm Credit Services in
Klamath Falls, OR, but
another chapter was finally
added as an Agricultural
Representative for a local
bank. Van was an active
member of the Knights of
Columbus and the Sacred
Heart Catholic Church in
Miles City and served on
the school board.
Van was preceded in
death by his wife, parents,
sisters Mary Lou Kimball
and Patsy Manning, and his
brother Robert. He is sur
vived by his three sons,
Thomas and wife Jean Ann
of Meridian, ID, Michael and
wife Kim of Eagle, ID, and
Jon of Klamath Falls, OR.
He has three grandchildren,
Matthew, Bradly, and
Jacob, and one great
grandchild (so far), Corbin.
During his final years, he
remained inseparable from
a very special friend and
companion, Colleen Sherer.
Van drove until the age of
89, and they were frequent
ly seen going to dinner and
a movie. Together they
showed that no matter the
stage of life, there can be
gifts waiting for us again.
A celebration of life will
be held at 10:00am on
Saturday, December 3,
2022, at Bowman Funeral

Gloria Esperanza
Clavijo
November 25, 2022
Gloria Esperanza Clavijo
passed away on November
25, 2022, at the age of 84
due to complications from
congestive heart failure.
She was born in La Paz,
Bolivia, in 1938 to Primitivo
and Juana Clavijo. She
immigrated to the United
States in the early 1960s.
Gloria became a US citizen
and remained in the Atlanta
area for the remainder of
her life. She had resided in
Cumming, GA, since 1993.
Gloria placed significant
emphasis on education for
herself and for everyone in
her family. She attended
Mercer College of
Pharmacy and was the
only woman to graduate in
the Mercer Pharmacy class
of 1965. She subsequently
studied at the Pasteur
Institute in Paris, France.
She began her career as a
pharmacist at Grady
Hospital in Atlanta. Later,
she moved to what was
then Georgia Baptist
Hospital, where she
worked for more than 40
years. In 1992, she was
selected to work in the
pharmacy in the newly
acquired Baptist North
Hospital, a 26-bed facility
near GA 20 in Cumming.
She moved with the hospi
tal when the new 41-bed
facility was built in 1999. In
2002, it became Northside
Forsyth Hospital and is
now a 389-bed facility.
Gloria worked through tre
mendous growth in the
local hospital and in
Forsyth County.
Gloria was also a
respected member of the
staff of Good Shepherd
Catholic Church in

particular attention to the
rapidly growing Hispanic
community served by the
church. One of the most
selfless people anyone
would ever meet, she pro
vided warmhearted support
to parishioners of Good
Shepherd both while
attending church activities
and in their personal lives.
Those of us whose lives
she touched find solace in
the fact that we witnessed
a true saint. Gloria is sur
vived by her sister, Gaby
Aguirre, nine nephews and
nieces, fifteen grandneph
ews and grandnieces, and
an entire community of
beloved friends from Good

ABOUT US AND OUR VALUES
The public has a right to know, and
the Forsyth County News is dedicat
ed to that principle and the “contin
ued enlightenment and freedom of
the people of North Georgia,” as
engraved outside our building.
The pursuit of truth is a fundamen
tal principle of journalism. But the
truth is not always apparent or
known immediately.
A professional journalist’s role is
to report as completely and impar
tially as possible verifiable facts so
readers can, based on their own
knowledge and experience, deter
mine what they believe to be the
truth. That is often an ongoing pur
suit as journalists work to uncover
stories and follow those stories
wherever they lead, regardless of
preconceived ideas.
The news they report is separate
from the opinions shared in the
pages of the FCN, which include
those by its columnists, political car
toonists and readers who submit let
ters to the editor.
The presentation of both news and
opinions is designed to educate,
entertain and foster community con
versation. Readers are encouraged to
challenge and sharpen their percep
tions based on that presentation.
And we encourage readers to do
the same for us, offering news tips,
criticisms and questions.
