We learn from authority, that General Clarke, of Virginia, has lately had a rencontre with the savages in the weftern country, gained a capital advantage over them, and made forty prisoners. His army was composed chiefly of -Virginia volunteers, to whose valor and adivity too much praise cannot be given. Incompliance with the requisition of Congress for railing troops, on account of an Indian war; the General Assembly ot Conuedicut have appointed Col. David Humphreys, to be commandant of a regiment. By very receht aefcounts from St. John’s, Nova-Scotia, we are informed that Benedict Arnold, having attempted to JOCKEY some of the inhabitahts out of their property, but being deteded, and the people being much exasperated, offered to deliver him up to the Americans for ten dollars ; but alas ! before the bargain was firmly agreed on, he made his elcape to Halifax, and there got protection fiom the populace. AUGUSTA, Dec. it. On Tuefday last was run for over the race ground adjoin ing this town, the four mile heats, a purse of one hundred pounds, by Selem, entered by Mr. Williamson, Dove, by Mr. Wills, and Flying Childers, by Major Jenkins. The firft heat w-as taken by Selem ; when Childers threw bis rider, and was deemed distanced. The second heat was also taken by Sfelem. On the day following was run for, the two mile heats, a purse of fifty pounds, by Eclipse, entered by Mr. Edwards, Mark Anthony, by Major Glafcock, Flemnap Filly, • by Mr. Booker, Flying Childers, by Major Jenkins, Nancy Drwfon, .. by Col. Milton, and Fanny Hill, by Mr. Williamson. The firft heat was taken by Eclipse, when Nancy Dawson was distanced. The second heat taken by Eclipse, when Childers came in the second horse. And on Thursday was run for, one mile heats, a purse of thirty pounds, by Chatham, entered by Mr. Williamson, Ricefield Filly, by Major Jenkins. The firft and second heat taken by Chatham. In the evening there was a ball, and an elegant entertain ment prepared at Mr, Wamberfie’s, attended by a numerous and polite assembly of ladies and gentlemen.
