IN perusing your lad Saturday’s Paper I observed a pretty,
little, Jmart ■ adVertifement, which I suppose, as is gene
rally the cale with productions of this kind, is no bad emblem
of the genius of its author, though his perjon, it seems, is
rather athletic. lam what the world calls, but perhaps im
properly, an antiquated VIRGIN; and am —let me fee—
about thirty,— yet some elderly Ladies, who were my com
panions when we were children, fay,—out of mere spite I
think, that I am at lead fifty-nine. However, thanks to
my good fate ! even that is within the limitation prelcribed
by this bind, complying , young beau, who, I have reason to
hope by the tenor of his advertisement, has difeemmeut enough
to fee my merits, which all the red of his sex, who have had
the honor of my acquaintance, have been stupidly blind to.
My fortune, if I Ihould be Jo fortunate as to get this defercable
cbjeSl, I undertake to affirm, will be fully equal to our deserts.
With refpeX to my virginity, fuffice it to fay, I have never
been married; as to my family and connexions be they what
they may, I can fay as much as my beau has done, that they
are indijputable . Finding that he is not particular as to figure
or face, I ihall foi bear to deferibe mine.—RefpeXing my
place of residence the beau mud excuse me if I refufe to in
form him thus publicly of it; as there are very few gentle
men in this place but who visit me occasionally, I e
cannot long want an introduXor.
But, Mr. Printer, lince writing the foregoing, there has
anfen a doubt, of which you will please to delire a speedy ex
p anation t is, whether this advertiser is of the masculine
or femme gender, or both; for perceiving l'ome strange lan
guage at the bottom of the advertilemeut, which I took to be
Indian, I entertained a very high opinion of the writer’s learn
ing and flrcngth of parts j and applied to a certain philosopher
ol my acquaintance for an interpretation, who told me that
the words Homo caret uxorem weie Latin, and that their lite
ral hgnification in Engliih was Man wants a wife. The phi
losopher farther told me that the word homo was not confined
to a man , but comprehended both sexes colletfively. If so,
this writer may be an Hermaphrodite, and can by no means
