Our lad contained an account of the late terrible conflagra* tion at Richmond. The following is another account of that truly unfortunate event, taken from the Virginia Gazette of the iothinftant: “ At four o’clock on Monday morning last the inhabitants of this city were alarmed by a fire, tVhich broke oiit at an uninhabited house near Mr. Andjerfon’s tavern. The wind being up, and the house old and dry, this turbulent element quickly spread its flames around, communicating to houses in three directions, which threw all into confufion, and would have baffled the most expett firemen ; a line was for med for the purpose of conveying; water to the engine, but through the unsteadiness of many the line was often broke and thrown into confufion, and; to add to the mifconduft, an engine was quitted in the middle of the street, which was nearly destroyed. By aClive exertions Byrd’s tobacco ware house was many times extinguished ; but at last the number of fiery coa s which fell put an end to every attempt, being burnt with about 200 hogsheads of tobacco, and 160 were laved. When the warehouse was burning the fire was at its height, and the scene truly melancholy, raging with uncon troled fury ; after three hours violence; and deftroyinga square of the principal houses and stores, it abated, leaving a dreadful vestige of its dire effefts, and several worthy cha racters in opulence and ease nearly deprived of their all. - Alas, how uncertain are earthly pofleflions—this young city, about rearing its head in point of trade, &c. receives a check from that Unconquerable element. It is suggested that Vermont and British America fofler the madr.efs of the mal-contents, by theic counsels and promiles. Whether we shall conquer this ef fort, or whether it will conquer us, depends on the pecuniary aid of the tranquil states. It is certain if Massachusetts yields, that the vigors will extend their conquests, and very deftruff ive consequences will pervade from their victory the whole empire.
