embrace the occasion of presenting you the inva
luable memorial of their sentiments on your
eminent merits.
Were it possible to enhance the honor conferred by
the sovereign authority, it would be derived from
the consideration that their applanfe was reci
procated by the late illustrious commander in
chief and the whole army.
I have the honor to be, Sir,
With the most perfect consideration,
Your obedient and humble Servant,

that this is accompanied with the approbation of
our late commander in chief, of yourfelf, and the

States to Major General Baron Steuben.

■SIR, • '
■ I have the honour to deliver the sword direci-
W t° be presented to you by the United States in
■ongrefs afiembled, the 29th of October, 1781.
■ The approbation of your country will, lam
persuaded, be peculiarly grateful to [a mind Hire
yours, formed for honourable pursuits.
The fatisfaflion I experience in the performance
of my duty in this instance is euhanced from the
consideration of your connexion with the corps
of artillery, and with my highly efieemed friend
the late General Greene.
The expectation of your arrival in New-York,
in order to take your feat in Congress, prevented
the sword being forwarded to you in Georgia im
mediately on its reception at this office.
I am, Sir,
With great refpeCt,
Your very' humble servant.
H. KNOX.
The Hon. Major Pierce .
New-York, Jan. 13, 1787.

My sincere thanks are due to you for the polite
manner in which you have been pleased to deliver
me the sword directed to be presented by the Unit
ed States in Congress assembled, on the 29th
October, 1781.
I will preferVe it as ari'honourable teffimony of
public notice, and, whilst it serves to express the
approbation of my country (the greatest reward a
soldier can experience) it will likewise serve to
awaken in my mind, the remembrance of that
great man General Greene, it/whofe service I ob
tained it.
Was it possible, Sir, to heighten the gratitude
and pleasure I feel on the present occasion, it would
be from your consideration of my connection
with the corps of artillery, and in the reflection
that I once held a commission in that depart
* ment of the army over which you presided withfo
much honour and propriety.
I have the honor to be,
SIR,
With great refpeCt,
Your mod obedient, and
Most humble servant,
WILLIAM PIERCE.
