POETRY. O t ■■ %„ 3&C3K3I£SO£3CTC A PHARSODY on RU M. —— vacant. Ovid. C"1 REAT Spirit hail!—Confufions angry fire, JT And like thy parent Bacchus, born of fire: The goal’s decoy ; the greedy merchant’s lure; Disease of money, but reflexions cure. Wc owe, great DRAM ! the trembling hand to thee, The hcadflrong purpolc, and the feeble knee; The lofa of honor j and the cause of wrong; The brain enchanted, and the fault’iing tongue, Whilst Fancy flies before thee unconfin’d, Thou Icav’ft disabled Prudence far behind.; In thy l'urfuits our fields are left forlorn, \V hi 111 giant weeds oppress the pigmy corn. Thou tltrow’ll a mill before he planter's eyes ; The plough grows idle, and the harvelt dies. By thee refrefli’d, no cruel North’s we fear; ’Tis ever warm and calm when thou art near: On the bare earth for thee expos’d we lie, And brave the malice of a frowning sky. Like thofc that did iu antient times repent, Wc Tit in allies, and our eloathes are rent. From thee a thousand flatt’ring whims cfcape, Like hasty births, that ne’er have perfeX fliape. Thine ideots seem in gay delusion fair, But born in flame, they soon expire in air. O grand deluder! such thy charming art, ’Twcre* good wc never lliould meet, or ne’er fliould part, Ever abfeond, or ever tend our call, Leave us our lenfe entire, or none at all. ANECDOTE. OF all the vices peculiar to the aboriginals of this country that of lying is not the least. Some years since, one Tom Hyde, an Indian fa mous for his cunning, came into a tavern at Brook field, and after a little talk, told "the landlord he had been hunting, had kill’d a fine fat deer, and that if he would give him a quart of rum, he would tell him where it was. The landlord did not with t o let Hip so good an opportunity to obtain his veni son, and immediately mcafured the Indian his rum. Well, fays Tom, do you know where the great meadow is; —Yes—Well, do you know where the great marked maple-tree, that flands in it, is, Yes —well, there lies the Deer. Away polled the taverner, with his team, in quell of his pnrehafe— he found the meadow, and the tree, it is true ; hut h;s searching after the Deer were in vain, and he returned no heavier, but in chagrin, than he went—some days after, he met the Indian, and violently accused him of the deception—Tom heard him out—and, with the cooluefs of a philo sopher, replied—“ Did you not find the meadow, as I laid.—Yes—and the tree, —Yes—and the Deer, No—Very good, continues lie, you found two truths to on: lie } which was very well for an Indian .
