ORIGINAL POETRY.
,
ODE TO. PITY.
t( Homo sum , nihil humanum ame alirnum puto .”
TO feel another’s heartfelt woe,
In foft compafliou’s overflow,
Os sympathetic care :
To sooth th’unhappy in diflrefs,
To mingle sorrows, make them less,
Lo! Pity does appear.
Charafterirtic of the heart,
That gladly ads the humane part,
To dignify the foul :
The pitying maid is ever near,
And drops with sympathy a tear,
The wretched to condole.
* v
To cheer th’unfortunate diftrelPd,
To raise th’affliCtect and opprelT’d,
Low poverty to rear :
*A willing part with each (he bears,
Their varied ills alike the thares,
And proves the friend lincere.

. The human from the brutal mind,
By her fair pencil is outlin’d,
T n that blight picture man :
The genial paflions of the foul,
Move in the sphere of her control,
Defign’d in nature’s plan.
Celeflial Pity! be it mine,
To court compaflion at tby ihrine,
That pure philanthropy :
By feeling hearts best understood,
Aiming at universal good ,
And thus mark’d out by THEE.
