ELEGY : To a Friend .
£*EE with Hern eye relenting vengeance weeps !
Her voice forbids the veins of war to bleed—
Ambition's plume in anguifli’d tears (he deeps,
And bids it droop, repentant, o’er each deed.
Now foft ey’d pity's swelling bread (hall heave,
When groans of sorrow sigh upon the air;
And the Hern vet’ran seek the Briton’s grave,
And drop o’er valour’s urn an alien tear!
His war-worn cheek with feeling’s glow (hall burn,
When the fougbt-field with ling*ring Heps he
treads :
'Tis valour's ta/k its vift’ries thus to mourn.
And weep the path the hand of honor leads.
In Rome's decline 'twas thus her vet’rans fought,
( —Ere in his tomb proud Otho’s spirit dept—)
When by experience’ rugged lei Tons taught—
Contending legions dropt their arms, and wept 1
Ye sons of pow’r, let honor's debt be paid,
Let the brave soldier on your breads repose j
Let gratitude endirine the hero’s blade,
Who fuatch’d his falling country from her foes.
Ne’er let him want, who help’d that sane to rear,
Whence freedom bids the Jons of wealth to finite:
Wipe from his hardy cheek that rolling tear—
Let it not fall—’twill curse th'ungrateful foil!
'Twill blot the annals of a wade of fame,
And tarni(h all your deeds of bright renown;
'Twill fix eternal digma on your name
The tears of virtue brightens but its own I
Ah ! could your coffers India’s treasures know,
And gratitude in ev’ry bofoin burn;
What wealth can charm the anguith’d eye of woe
Or wake the hero in his silent urn ?
What gold could footb the widow’d mother’s foul ?
What—bid oblivion take the name of friend !
Could wealth or honors sorrow’s nerve control,
Why tbu« mould glitve the bread of Laurens
rend l
In age undielter’d— fee him seek the grave—
Where the bright profpefts of his life repose ?
He finds no solace where the laurels wave,
And owns no fragrance in the grave-sprung rose!
Deaf as the adder is the ear of woe
Dim is the fun, when sorrow spreads her wing—
Unheard the dulcet foundsof fame will flow
Unleen will bloom the rosy bofom’d spring.
Nc er can the dory’d monument repay,
Wlieie keen affeftion weeps a darling son:
Trophies but fplcndid misery display,
And fame but speaks how greatly we’re undone !
I law Cordelia, child of grief, recline—
The languid willow wav’d at ev’ry figh*
“ M Heay’n !” die cry’d-“ if at thy ilroke I

—Wild was the roll of anguiih in her eye I
