' MOUNT VERNON.
An ODE, infer.bed to General Walhington.
Written at Mount Vernon, August 1786•
By Colonel HUMPHREYS .
BY broad Potowmack’s azure tide,
Where Vernon’s Mount, in sylvan pride,
Lifplays its beauties far :
Great Wajhmgton to peaceful fliades,
Where no uulnilow’d with invades,
Retir’d from field of war.
Angels might fee, with joy, the sage,
Who taught the battle where to rage,
Or quench’d itsfpreading flame—
On work?, of peace employ that hand,
Which wavM the blade of high command.
Mid hew’d the path to fame,
let othcis ling his deeds in aVms,
A nation lav'd and conquest’s charms,
Fofierity (hallhear:
s Twas mine* return’d from Europe’s courts,
To lhaie his thoughts, partake his sports,
And footbe his martial ear.
To thee, mt friend, these lays belong :
Thy hippy feat inspires my song,
Wuh gay, perennial blooms;
With fruitage ta<r, and cool retreats,
Whole tiow’ry wilde nels of sweets,
The ambient air pet fumes.
Here fpringits eailiefl buds displays,
Here latest on the leaflefs sprays,
1 he plumy people sing.
The vernal ihow’r, the ripening year,
Th’ autumnal flore, the winter drear,
For thee new pleasures bring.
Here tap’d in philosophic case,
Wi bin thy walks, beneath thy trees,
Amidll thine ample farms:
No vulgar converse heroes hold,
But pall or futuie feeues unfold,
Or dwell on nature’s charms.
What wondrous «ei a have we seen!
plac’d on this ifttmis half hetween,
A rude and polilli d slate ;
We saw the war tempestuous rife,
In arms a world, in blood the ikies,
In doubt an empire’s fate.
Theftormis calm’d, feren’d the hcav’n,
And mildly o’er the climes of ev’n,
Expands th’ imperial day :
“ Oh God, the fourcc of light sup erne,
“ Shed on our dulky morn a g ea n,
“ To guide our doubtful way !
" Rcftrain, dread pow’r, our land from crimes !
“ What leeks, tho’blelt beyond all times,
“ So querulous an age l
** What means to freedom such disgust ;
“ Os change, of anarchy, the lud,
“ The flcklenefsand rage?”
So spake his country’s friend, with sighs,
To find that country still despise
The Legacy he gave—
And half he fear’d his toils were vain,
And much that man would court a chain,
And live through vice a llave.
A transient gloom o’ercaft his minds
Yet still on Providence reclin’d,
The patriot fond believ’d,
That pow’r benign too much had done,
To leave an empire’s talk begun,
Imperfectly atchiev’d,
Thus buoy’d with hope, with virtue blelt,
Os ev’ry human bliss polleft,
He meets the happier h mrs :
His Ikies aflume a lovelier blue,
His profpeds brighter rife to v^w,
And fairer bloom his flow’rs.
