An attempt to verftfy the AdJrefs to a Hus
I Dand in the (Economy of human Life.
WHEN thou, oh man! the lovely fair can
find,
Whose- manners foft, with mental grace is join’d,
Her form be such, as fancy shall approve,
Her bread replete with geoticnefs and love.
Oh! take her to thy home, thy arms, thy heart,
Let nought but death the nuptial tie difpart;
She is thy
Ordain’d by heaven the noblest balm of life.
As miflrefs of thy house, confefs her sway,.
And thus inltVuCt thy lervants to obey,
Let.no imperious airs her peace annoy,
She (hares thy grief, and let her lharc thy joy.
Let mecknefs guide, when tbou her faults reprove,
And may each admonition flow from love.
Trust all thy fecrcts to her gentle bread,
And there rcpofe thy anxious cares to rest..
Be faithful to her bed, she owns the race,
The charming pledges which thy union grace,
And oh! when fell disease exerts its pow’r,
And fad affliction darkens cv’iy hour ;
When pallid ficknefso’er her cheeks is spread,
And the fair train of rosy charms is fled,
When all the beauties languid! in her eye,
And her foft bosom heaves the aching sigh.
Oh ! let affliction’s sympathetic glow,
Sooth all her pangs, and mitigate her woe,
Beall, attention all, thy aid impart,
With sweet endearments raise her drooping heart.
Watch round her couch, anticipate each want,
And ere die forms the widi, her withes grant,
From thee one look of pity (hall avail,
And eafc her pain when ten physicians fail.
Oh ! let her tender frame engage thy care,
And let thy kindued all her fuflT’rings diare.
Be this the darling objcCt of thy lif^
To love, tocherilh, and to bless thy* wife.
the thraldom inflicted formerly on the Englidi,
by a swarm of Norman Barons, and therefore re
commending it t > every Frank, iike men of spi
rit, to guard against it.
Major Newell perfectly agreed with Colonel
Daugherty, and added, that we were constitution
ally placed in an independent condition, and that
we had both spirit and power within ourfelvcs dif
fident to support the independency of our rising
republic ; and that, as his fentiinents on this head
were already diffidently exprefled, he would only
mention that he could not agree to any other
mode of negociation with North-Carolina, than
on terms claimed by any other fiftcr date, and
called for the yeas and nays.
Colonel Hartou agreed that Franklin had diffi
dent strength within herfelf to support her inde
pendency, but that that strength ought to be nou
ri(hed by a found policy. He was not the least
apprehensive that the petition sent by the small ini
mical party to North-Carolina, for men, arauni
tion and arms, to subdue our infant republic
would meet with any success. For, laying aside
the continentals of that date and a few counties
besides, who joined with patriotism and resolu
tion in the Jaft war, North-Carolina had proved
not to be very alert; and he was certain that
those men would not now assist to enthral those of
their brethren, who received and protected the re
cords of North-Corolina, when Governor Caf
well could only raise about twenty-five men among
themselves, to escort the said records over the
mountains to Franklin. But he feared the plan in
debate, would tend to check our Government by
confufing weak minds, and therefore condemned
it utterly ; and recommended the uniform conduct
to be ardently pursued, which had already ac
quired Franklin refpeCtable and powerful friends,
and the applause of justice.
Capt. Chillam was tired of the state of administra
tion in Franklin as it now flood, and therefore was
urgent for a reconciliation, but declared himlelfin
cap ablc-tf pointing out the rcadieft mode to ob
tain a better, and therefore called for the dccifion
of. the House.
The Honorable General Cocke found that, the
plan was discovered, and thereby loft its virtue,
and that he now condemned it as useless ; but he
still believed it might, undisclosed, have conduc
ed peace smoothly into our commonwealth. That
his argument in support of the motion, had beeu
fcverely handled, bat not more so than what he
knew it would fuffer from undergoinga debate.
But in regard to duplicity, he scorned it equally
with any Member on this floor, and no lei's de
spicable conduct than that practiced by those in
confideralle charaCers alluded to by the Honorable
General Kennedey, could have made him to sup
port such a scheme for to couateraC an enemy. •
The motion was withdrawn, and another agreed
to: That Commiflionors tliOuld be appointed to
wait On North-Carolina Aflembly, wiih instruc
tions from the General Aflembly of Franklin
to negOciate peace with the slate of North Caro
lina, reciprocally to the honor and justice of those
two nations, as independent of each other.
