AUGUSTA, Sept. 15.
Ex trad of a letter from John Sevier, Esq. Cover•
nor of the State of Franklin , to his Honor the
Governor of this State , dated Mount Pleasant ,
Augujl 30, 1787.
“ Refpefting the conduft of the Creeks, I think
it extraordinary indeed, that they ihould have the
insolence to demand any white person as a retalia
*loll, when, it is notoriously known, they were
the firft aggreflors, and that they have frequently,
and indil'criminately, murdered our good and
peaceable citizens for many months part
« The two inclofed letters from Colonels Ro
bertson and Bledfoe, will inform you of the many
murders and ravages committed in that country by
the Creeks : also of the fate of Capt. Davenport
and fume others in the Chickefaw nation. From
part experience, I believe, every overture made
by that perfidious nation, the Creeks, is intended
for a deception.—The State of Georgia may be
Convinced fhAt we will encounter every difficulty,
in order to raise a formidable force to aft in enn
junftion with your army, in case of a campaign.
“ We have lately been informed from Virginia,
that a number of gentlemen in that ilate are ready
to join us as volunteers.
“ Our Aflembly fat but a few days, and .ad
journed to the 17th of September—They ordered
40 0 men to be raised for the defence of our fron
tiers ; they will be stationed in the vicinity ofC'hi
ckamaugah.”
Ext rad of a letter from Colonel Robert fen to the
Governor of the State of Franklin, dated Najhm
ville , (Cumberland) Augujl I, 1787.
“ By accounts from the Chickefaws we are in
formed, that at a Grand Council held in the Creek
nation, it was unanimouily determined, to do their
utmost, this fall, to cut off this country, and we
expeft the Cherokees have joined them.
“ On the yth of July a party of Creeks killed
Capt. Davenport, Agent for Georgia, and three
more in the Chickefaw nation, wounded three, and
took one prisoner; which the Chickefaws are not
able to resent for want of ammunition.
“ The people are drawing together in large
flations, and do every thing necefl'ary for their de
fence ; but, I fear, without fame timely afliflance,
we (hall chiefly fall a facrifice-—Ammunition is
very scarce, and a Chickefaw now bcie, tells us,
that they imagine to reduce our flations by killing
our cattle, &c. and flarve os tout.
“ We expeft they are now on their way to this
country to the uumber .of a thoufaud.”
Extrafl of a letter from Col Bledfoe to the Governor
of the Spate of FrankLn, dated Sumner county ,
Aagufls, 1787-'
“ The Savages are daily committing the molt
cruel outrages —Poor Major Hall and his eldest
son fell a facrifice to their fury two days ago, near
Bledfoe’s lick. They have killed about 24 persons
in the course of a few months in this feulement,
befidcs a number more near it.’*
Extraß of a letter from General Cocke to His Honor
the Governor of this State , dated Mu lb try Grove ,
(State of Franklin) June 25, 1787.
“ When I take a view of the local and political
ikuation of this country, I conceive the intefeft of
your slate, so far as.refpefts Indian affairs, almost
inseparable with the fafety and happiness of this
country :—I am certain every thing to serve your
slate or its interest will be done by the people of
Flan kiln—General Kennedy, I imagine, will be
able to raise a thousand or fifteen hundred men as
volunteers, and I think I can raise a like number ;
on army of two or three thousand men will be quite
fufficient to march through any of their towns.
I hope the Indians have not been To fuccefsful in
>our slate as the Cherokees report; the accounts
from that nation are that the Creeks have killed .
twenty-five families without the loss of a man—l
JigvG ordered -the. different Colonels under my
'oommand to hold their men in readiness, to march
when neceflity (hall require it.”
-MARRIED.] Mr. James Moss, of this town,
to Miss Tihingham, of Soutb-Caroliua.
