An ELEGIAC ODE.
WHERE steeps the spirit of the patriot band,
Who bade oppression tremble on his throne?
To whai dark corner of her bleeding land
Has the bright genius of our country flown?
Perhaps, retir’d to some feque<ter*d bourn,
She gives to grief her solitary hours 1
•Twines the fad cypress, Grant , around thy urn,
And, for thy fate maternal sorrows pours:
Or beckons hifPry, to the mofly cell,
And graves thy name upon the lading page:
Hands the bright scroll to time, and bids him tell
Thy gallant deeds to ev'ry distant age !
Or fay, with anguilh does (he take her (land
Where wild Ohio rolls his waves along ?
Where by their midnight (ires, the painted band
Caroufc in blood, and raise the deathful song ?
Ah no! I fee her in yon gloomy wood
That nods o*er broad Ontario’s savage (hore 5
Fierce bowls the dorm across the swelling flood.
And loud the tempest-beaten forges roar. /
Pcnflve (he Hands,—her sacred head reclin’d
In sorrow’s guise, on her inverted spear;
Loose flow her trefles to the boift’rous wind.
And down her boflom teals the pearly tear.
Not such her form, when in the front of war
fche hurl’d defiance to a tyrant’s throne,
Not such the form, that high in vitfry’s car
Oh Saratoga’s plains, in triumph (hone!
Pee! from her brows, (he tears the laurel crowm
Which hope, too fondly had encircled there)
Calls the bright wreath with indignation dovn,
And plucks the olive from her glitt’ring spear.
•« Away—vain emblems I * (thus the goddess cries)
Wove by fond fancy, in her flatt’ring hours,
I’m yet np conq’rer while yon banner flies,
Nor yet at peace while yonder fortrefs lowr’s?
How long ‘(ball British hofis insult my land—
How long (hall savage war ita horrors spread ?
Will vengeance rife no more at my command,
And guid my thunders to each hostile head?
Where is the godlike warmth that once infpir*d
Columbia’s sons to deeds of daring worth?
Where are the fouls by gen’rous freedom flr’d,
That urg'd, in danger’s front, my legion forth ?
Say, m the lap of ptatt y lies virtue dead ?
Hat freedom loft her wonted pow’er to charm;
Say—from each bread has sacred honor fled,
And luxury unnerv’d each warrior's arm?
regenerate sons! cannot your country's tears
Awake you from your dull, lethargic rest!
Cann t the iufults which (he daily bears,
Roufr up the (lumb'ring ardor.in each bread.
Bee—Murder (talking from his gory cell!
See—Defolution bathes her feet in blood!
Hear ye the x found of death—the savage yell
That (hrilly echoes thro* the trembling wood!
From yonder village fee the flames arise ?
And foe—the drooping tenants captive led!
Hark! whence that ftiriek—• yon blooming virgin
dies,
And !o» the feeble matron bows her head.
Look —look again ?—excrutiating pain!—
The fire, the buiband !—O! in pity (pare !
Now, now thy ga(h ! and now his (inews drain!
And now his quiv’ring fleih the pincers tear!
Ye silken (laves of luxury and ease,
Who, funk in doth, forget your former deeds ;
Where are the ble flings of your boasted peace,
While thus, at every pore your country bleeds ?
’Tit Britain’s sons hound forth the lavage band,
For them, his tomax does the Indian raise,
Yon deaths are ided by their fell command.
At their command does yonder village blaze!
Low in the dull your trambled treaties lie,
Your just demands, the feitblefs race disdains;
Rouse then to vengeance,—bid my thunders fly,
And chafe the murderers from my groaning plains 1
