orders that you Ihould take the whole of the
firft division, and inarch against the Indians,
commanding that none Ihould be spared, as I
had, and have now the greatest reason to be
lieve, that even luch of them as exprefled
friendlhip, were accomplices in the murder
you allude to in your letter ; wherefore it
was. I gave orders none thould be spar
ed, as I confiJered the crime of murder com
mitted under the cloak of friendftiip, to be
doubly attrocious. It appeared by your re
turn that there wsre some whp not join
you, amongft.whom were Mr. Barnard and
Mr. Patrick, who were tried by a court
martial, and these two were fined. The
•propriety of this decision you seem to doubt,
at you fay in your letter, “ I had adifere
minate power to turn back any such as lived
near the fronte<-rs—l thould actually have
turned back the aforefaid Mr Barna* and Mr
patrick had they met at the place of Bande
voul'e unless it had a been their pleasure to
•go.” And for your apology, you fay one of
them lives within four, and the other within
fix miles of the frontiers; whereas, one of
them lives at least seven, and the other nine
or ten miles from them ; besides, all the in
termediate space was at that time well re
plenilhed with inhabitants j wherefore, your
• apology to excufethem from duty is as ficti
tious, and absolutely falfe, as all your other
aflertions. It surprises me beyond concep
tion, that you have solicited for a suspension
of the decision of the court martial in be
half of any such man as Mr. Barnard, who
has not been guilty of disobedience only, but
alio of taking up arms, and actually opposing
troops legally embodied for the purpose of
re-eftablifliing pe ce and security to the
countt y. In the course of the late war, in
what point of view would such a man have
been considered ■? Would not the gallows,
or death in some other manner have been his
fate ? And thould he not have been consider
ed worthy of it ? I atk the world if any
man can commit an aftion more daring or
more criminal ? Yet, you will not only call
inqueftion the legallity of the sentence of the
court, but also icprefent my proceedings in
this case as partial; and you not only endea
vour to reflect odium on me, but you af
front the court, by, as far as you cau, mak
ing their decision my crime, which supposes
that the members thereof have been influ
enced by my dictates.

At four o’clock in the morning of the ift of

this city, and a vigorous contest was main

saulted at the fame time. The enemy was
repuifed from the four firft mentioned
with very great loss. The poll of Ouder
kerk sustained three different attacks in the
spare of three hours. Unable to withftaqd
the fire from this place, the enemy abandon *
ed their enterprise, which cost them dear.
The poll of the Dyke of Haarlem being at
tacked in two places, and by afuperior force,
was abandoned almost without resistance, and

was carried by the Prussians in the afternoon \ 1
and it is laid it might have been better de
fended. An armistice for an unlimited time
ensued ; and each party is to give 12 hours
notice before the recommencement of hosti

will be renewed, as frefti negotiations are be
gun. The number of killed and wounded is
not known.
