Mr, Smith f
(lease to insert the following Lines in your
next Gazette—they represent the substance
of a conversation which happened the day
after theCharltfton Races in January 1787.
SAY 3 uncle Frank to cousin Ben,
“ You. may fell well that bond, Sir,
* 4 But then® fays Ben* “ ms promise iVae
..." To take it out in land, Sir,
** And by no means to, pass the fame
“ Or even to expofc it—
Since he so hon’rably exchang’d . ■*— 5 .
u Poh! poh! that’s nought, who Knows itP
mt Why Ben! till now, I rated thee
“ A lad of penetration—
«* There’s nought to do; but certify
“ The sequent allegation.
** That fifty thousand acres lye
« Just for your culling ready—
Let me but have your riding chair,
I’ll put my fill—they’re eighty.
u And also write a letter long
« To ’lucidate the matter —
<< Say that he's honest, just and true;
« And thus a sheet bespatter.
« And where as much is to be made
«« By telling truth —Indeed, Sir,
«# I’d that prefer as I do now
1 is For honor is his creed, Sir.
, 4'' T P
4t Yet he’s so d-d a stupid fool,
« That flatterers can with eafc, Sir,
sc Tickle his pride before his face,
« And twist him as they please, Sir. 9
/
it But then, dear uncle, I did fay,
<« That I had sown my wild oatji
«f And if this bond I pass away
<* My fame it little promotes.
f t You need not vex your head for that,
€* F or Squander is the man, Sir;
«* He’ll fix it ail as you con’d with
« And that’s the very plan, Sir.
t
u He dailies off to-morrow soon
“ Virginia to re-visit;
V And on the way he sure will trade,
“ The bond —pray ! how much is it ?”
•« Five hundred pounds in land ’tis said
44 At (hillings ten per acre.”—
<* Then that is worth at least to you,
44 Two of another nature.”
