Whether ’twas happier ip the mind to flifle
The heats and tumults of outrageous paflion,
Or, with some prudent fair, in (olemn concrad
Os mltriraony, join: To have, to hold—
No more; and by that have to fay we end
The heart ach and the thousand love-sick pangs
Os celibacy. ’Twere a consummation
Devoutly to be wiflied. In nuptial band
To join 'till death dissolves ? Ay, there's the
rub;
For in that space what dull remorse may come,
When we have ta’en our solemn leave of li
berty,
!Muft give us pause. There’s the refped
That flacks our fpeedin suing for a change :
Fife who would bear the scorn and fnecrs
* which Batchelors,
When aged, feel; the pains and flatt’ring
fevers
Which each new face must give to roving
fancy,
When he might at once rid him of all
By a bare Tes t Who would with patience bear
To fret and linger out a Angle life,
But that the dread of something yet untry’d,
Some hazard in a ftate,from whose Arid bond
Death only can rcleafe, puzzles the will
And makes us rather chufe those ills we have,
Thau fly to others which we fancy greater:
This last refledion makes us flow and wary ;
FiSling the dubious mind with dreadful
thoughts
Os poutings, difeords, jealoufles, and cares,
Extravagantly great, intail’d on wedlock ;
Which to avoid, the lover checks his paflion,
And mifcrably dies, r 9
