authority or good grounds.

wounded; The Indians had for some time
surrounded the fort in Glynn, and at that pe
riod had collected the chief part of his dock
to drive off to the nation. This Burnet could

forward as he wiflied, with his son only charg
ed a party of about eight or ten Indians, who
Hed before hrim\ Such was their condernation
at his intrepidity, that they never fired a shot
at him until he had recovered all his cattle,
and was retreating with them: to his fort,
When they gave him' his wound, which we
have now the pleasure to assure the public is
not dangerous. So gallant was his behaviour
that he never Hinged his wound to his son for
fear of difeouraging him, until the cattle were
fafe under proteftion of the fort. ,
,May 1. A few Negroes, belonging to
Mr. Girardeau, were carried off from Liber
ty county, by the Indians, the beginning of
lad week. The fame party also wounded a
young man of the name of Smallwood.

is arrived at Charledon.

Mr. Whrefield, who went from here some,
time ago with a Talk from the Congreflional
Oommiflioners to the Creek nation, left Gen.
Pickens’s, Long Cane, South-Carolina,, on
the 18th of lad month—He expected to return
in about 20 days.
Mondar next is the day appointed for the
Convention of South-Carolina to meet in
Charledon:—And we are informed, that a
JHimber of the electors in the back counties of
that date, who never had read the Federal
Conditution, have indrufted their Delegates
to Vote" again ft it.
At the lad Superior Court held for the Di
llrk! of Ninety-Six, five persons were sen
tenced to fuffer death, viz. Two for murder,
two for burglary, and one for paffmg Coun
terfeit French Crowns.

“ By late accounts from the Wed we learn,
that the Superintendant of Indian Affairs has
lent Messengers to invite the Chiefs of the In
dian nations in the Northern diflritf to a ge
neral treaty, proposed to be held in May next,
©n the Mulkingum river, by the Superinten
dant, and the Governor of the Weftern Ter
ritory, in order to fettle all matters of un
cafinefs between the United States and the In
dian nations; and, it is hoped, as the meet
ing was fird proposed by the Indians, and a
greed toby Congress, matters may be accom
modated and the peace of the frontiers secured;
an event much to be withed, as new settle
ments cannot with lafety be made under the
preientdiffatisfied date 01 the Indians,—whofe
minds have been kept unealy and inflamed by
the cmiflariea of a certain neighbouring power,*
