April ij. Yesterday arrived the maiW
from Flanders, in which it is said that Spain
has made a demand on France of the assistance
of 24,000 men, conformably to the family
compact entered into in 1756, with a threat
that unless the demand be immediately com
plied with, the said compaft will be consider

Private letters from Warsaw mention fe
deral itiftances, in which the Imperial army
lias differed considerably on its march towards
the frontiers of the Ottoman dominions from
the repeated attacks of theTurkifli cavalry;
in one of which they totally cut off the rear
guard of a deiachraent of Austrians, who
were on their route to reinforce the troops
who are to undertake the siege of Belgrade.
The number of prisoners taken in this affair
Were 250, with two howitzers.
The country between Vienna and Belgrade
being almost one entire flat, interspersed with
forefts, it is exceedingly favourable to these
fcind of excursions and surprises from the
Turkifli cavalry, who seem perfectly to know
in what their superiority couiifts, and to make
the mod of it.
Ptivate letters from the Eaff-Indies men

way, if he makes any attempt to disturb the
tranquillity of that part of the globe.
The Spanish armaments begin to give a
very serious turn to our political deliberation!!,
as the allegation of its being intended to op
pose the progress of the Ruflian fleet into the
Mediterranean, seems to have no weight. It
is said that orders are given for hiring tenders
to be in preparation towards manning the
(hips for a fleet of observation.
Yejltrday arrived the Mail from France.
Frontiers of \Turkey , Feb. 24. A number
of particular letters advise, that the Prince
of Saxe Cobourg, on the 12th instant, sent a
lummons to the Pacha of Choczim to Surren
der, but received for answer, that he would
defend the place to the last extremity, and as

We have the following particulars of the
late unhappy accident at New-Orleans, by
thefehooner Governor Miro, afrived at Phi
ladelphia:—On Good Friday, the 21st of
March last, at halt after one, P. M a dread
ful fire broke cut in the dwelling-house of the
Treasurer of New-Orleans : so violent, that
notwithflanding all the pains and*good dispo
sition taken by the governor and iotendant, it
yras impoflible to Hop the progress of it.—r
The wind being very high and variable, the
fire caught in several parts of the town, al
inoft at the fame time; so that in the space of
four er five hour*, feveu-kight? of the town
was -contained; and the rapidity of the fire
prevented almost every citizen from saving
their merchandize and other effefls; and,
upon a calculation made after the fire, it ap
peared that the lots amounted to about fix or
l'even millions of dollars.

From the number of families which have
passed through this town for Kentuckey, fiuce
the opening of the spring, we may venture to
predid, that the emigrations to that country
in the year 1788, will exceed those of any
former year.
