We present as a grievance that at a time when the public exigencies demand the greatest ceconomy in she finances of the (late, that the General Xtfembly fliould add two hundred pounds per aihnum to the emdltirhents of the office of State Secretary, and continue a salary fO the Collector* of the Port of Savan nah, being two of the most profitable polls in the gifts of the ftate.‘ ( 4th. Wtf present as a grievance that the records belonging to each county are not deV posited in the fa die, agreeably to the direction of the fiftieth article of the confritiitibn, arid that the holders df taxable property 1 are* nbf obliged to make returns thereof in the county id which it may beas we conceive (rich jf flep would enable the receivers and collectors of the public taxes to execute the duties of their office with more decision and dispatch than if is possible under the present mode of conducting that business, and until that is clone, there' appears hardly a possibility of de tecting frauds that may be committed by ab sentees, or even inhabitants of the state, who are bale enough to conceal or make falfe re turns of their property. sth. We present as a grievance that re serves of land are made and kept in this (late, when the conditions on Which they Were made are not complied with ; and recommend that an Afl Should be paired to authorife the Land "Courts to grant the remainder of any such lands, where tbe intent and meaning thereof has not been fulfilled. 6th. We present as a grievance the want of an Aft to punish persons living in a date of ’ concubinage or adultery, and to punish baflardy, Which arri Shamefully praftifed in this county with impunity, contrary to the laws of God, and the peace arid welfitrc of the date'. W e prtfftnt as afgrieranc t the* want’ -of a law to punilh careless and evil disposed persons who make a praftice of burning the woods in this county, to the great injury of the range, foil, timber, arid other property of many of the inhabitants thereof. 17 th. We present the want of a fnfficient bridge over Brier Creek, at Rae’s Old Cow pen, as there is no palling the old one with out manifest ri sk and danger either on horse back or carriages. 18th. On the information of Wm. Neil, and William Harte, we present john Patter son, and Robert Bowling for neglecting to ■ open the road from Walker’s bridge to Lewis ville, of which they are Commissioners. YESTERDAY, after an abfcnce of nine years, arrived in this metropolis, from England, his Excellency JOHN ADAMS, Esq. late Ambatfador from the United States of America to the Court of Great-Britain,. with his lady. His Excellency the Governor • having previoufiy ordered that every mirk of refpeft be paid his Excellency on his arrival, the approach of the ship in which he arrived, was announced by a fignalfrom the Light, and a difebarge of cannon from the caflle; when off the castle he was saluted with a federal difeharge of cannon from the fortrefs, and when the ship had arrived at her moorings, the Secretary ,of the State’, by order of his ; Excellency the Governor, repaired in hi§ - Excellency’s carriage to the end of the pier, from whence, in the slate barge, the Secret— ary waited on the AmbafTador on board, and in his Excellency the Governor’s name con gratulated him on his arrival, and invited him and family to his Excellency’s feat. The wind being frelfi and fair, the ship arrived at town too early to admit out fellow-citizens receiving his Excellency in the manner they bad previonfly intended. Notwitbrtanding, short as the time was, the pier was crowded, and hit Excellency welcomed on shore by three huzzas, from several thousand persons.
