POET R Y. 30£30£3«3^:SS from the American Museum. An Address, delivered by Mr . Hallam, at the Theatre in Philadelphia, previous to an en tertainment performed for the benefit of the American Captives in Algiers . IN life's itrange scene what incidents a rife To Wound the virtuous, and confound the wife! From public guile, what private sorrow springs, What devastation from the fiate of Kings ! The (hame of natious, and the source of tears, Behold I the barb’rous triumph of Algiers; See chriffian blood bedew the burning plains, And friends to freedom languishing in chains ! See! mighty Europe crouches to the law, And one bold pirate keeps the world in awe. In days of yore, with pious phrenzy fraught, On Palestine’s fam’d fields what myriads fought, Tbeir rival monarchs partial views defpile, Glory their paflion, and a tomb their prize 1 Our modern fyflem, fatally refin’d, Corrupts the gen’rous ardour of mankind, And jealous nations with the Turk ally’d, Regain their virtue, and desert their pride. Those veterans, perhaps, whose patriot toil, Gave independence to their native foil, Loll in the fad viciflkudes of fate, Call on their country to repay the debt. Perhaps some father (hakes the pond’rous chain, His wretched offspring left to want and pain : Whence are those groaus, and whence that plaintive cry— Ah! speed your bounty, or a wife must die: And mark! where heav’nly charity appears, Corrcfts our errors, and dispels our fears, Through the dark dungeon spreads a kindly ray, And Aiields her chriffian vot’ries from dif> may i With savage pow’rs the glitt’ring bribe suc ceeds, And freedom from benevolence proceeds. When all our earthly bliss (hall pass away, This globe dissolve, and nature’s felf decay : When guilt (hall at impending judgment start, And keen afflittiou wound the hard of heart; Then white-rob’d charity her friends (hall cheer, And pay with int’reft what they lent her here. Ye sons of liberty, attend the theme, Indulge your feelings, and assert your fame : Let fad experience paint the bondsman’s woe, Aud still be blcfs’d, while blefliugs you bestow. -+jsosox#+- On DoGur FRANKLlN’i Jhedding a tear , nubile signing the Federal Corfiitution • THE Page, whom rival nations join to praise, Whose lengthen’d span one patriot scene dis plays, Revolving io his spacious mind the fate Os millions toiling in the servile slate With ardour grafp’d the pen, to sign the plan, Which gave his country all the rights of man. “ Enough,” he cry’d~« my God, I a(k no more! “ Excuse, my friends, a tear: I am four /core* To be let, THE Dwelling-house Next to Mrs. Lauder’s, lately occupied by Colonel Call.
