Jotham’s Fable of the Trees.
JUDGES IX. Chap.
Humbly addrejfed to antifederal 9 un
principled e letters*
FROM ridgy mountains wide domains,
The trees conven’d upon' the plains,
Each one his lib'ral vote did bring—
-4s freemen do—to chose their king:
Rcfolv’d true worth thould lead their choice,
And govern each aflenting voice,
* , W . f« i,
The olive-tree some firft invoke
To be their king—and thus they fjpoke—
“ Since, noble olive, thou art bleft
With riches far above the rest,
Come, be our king; exalt thy train ;
And o’er the lofty forelt reign.”
But thus the olive-tree reply’d—
“Shall I my fatnefs lay a fide ;
Sail I e’er stoop to meaner things,
And not produce the oil of kings
That govern empires with a nod;
Or not anoint the ptiefls of God:
Shall I such honors yield as these,
To be promoted o’er the trees (”
Some trees the fig-tree next addrefs’df,
An'1 f n]et it with the fame request.
“Shall I forego my native sweet,
Ms lay ry fruitV delicious meat,”
(Reply’d the tree) “ and live in vain,
O’er craggy mountain-trees to reign?”
The vine had next the invitation
To mount into the 1 sty flation.
But thus reply’d the .fruitful vine,
“ Shall I forfake my sparkling wine,
That cheers the heaits of Gods and men,
O’er fruitlefs sorest-trees to reign?
Then many trees, without preamble,
Address themselves unto the bramble.
4< Here bramble, we our fceptle bring *
Be thou o’er ail the trees the: king.”
To which the bramble thus reply’d—
If truly you in me confide—
Have me your royal fov’reign marie,
Then come and trust ye in my Hade. ..
But if ye deal deceitfully,
Or falfc and treach’rous prove to me,
Then let the bramble kindle flames,
That /hall proceed in burning streams
Among the trees, with qucnchlefs power,
And lofty Lebanon devour.

Though many centuries now are fled,
Since Jotham add his trees were dead j
Ye/ are, n ot things the fame as then i
fame with trees—the fame with men ?
DO we not fee some trees incline
To flight- tlhe olive, fig, and vine,
Neglefting worth and wouby things,
T® set up b-rambles for their kings ?
Tho 1 brambles are contemptuous small,
Compar’d with mountain cedars tall;
Yfet fire enough may kindle there',
To lay the lofty mountain bare:
Both mingling in the fatal doom:
As Rhine flew Caesar C/efer, Rome.
