ANECDOTE.
EVONA, an honest lawyer of Britain,
having read that fcvcral profeffions had
each their titular Saint, and convinced that
lawyers were as in their vocation
as either painters, ttioeinakers, or filbcrmen,
determined to apply to the Pope to nominate
a faint to patronize his faithful brethren.
Upon consulting his friends, the design
meeting their approbation he journeyed t<>
Rome, to plead in the cause of his profeflion,
in the full hope that his elorjuence would in
due his holiness to confer this favor upon so
considerable a body of honett men.
On being introduced to the father of the
church, and offering up weighty reasons in
support of his reqoett, the Pope truly sensible
of the integrity and upright tress of the appli
cant, exprefled great concern that rt could
not bfc complied with.
Evona, on the fuir being rejefted, exhibif
ed marks of the ttrongeft affiitfion, the dis
tress of the lovers of the church Id feulibly
touched the heart of the infallible man, that,
having weighed the matter in his bread, he
told the lawyer, if he would confcnt to be
blind-folded, and in that state walk three
times round the court of the Vatican, what
ever sculptured figure he ftopt at, the faint or
angel it represented, ihould be entered in
the huiy regiitcr as the titular pation of the
lawyers.
Evona with pleasure consented, and in a
short time he had compafTed the court —fiopt
at the representation of the Archangel Mi
chael, triumphing over Satan; elate with the
goodness of the Pope, Evona knelt down with
all humility, and ardently embraced the fi
gure of the vanquilhed devil; loudly ex
claiming, “ thou dear angel, who art always
the director of the attions of me and my bre
thren, deign therefore to be our protestor, pre
ferver, faint and patron, I here declare thou art
the object of my choice, and that I and all the
profclfois of the law, will place our affiance
in thee, and ever seek thy honor and glory.”
The bandage being removed from his eyes,
on beholding the angel he had chofcn, over
powered with grief, Evona funk down, and
yielded up his breath.
The Pope in commemoration, ordered the
event to he regirtered, but the lawyeis of that
time, making his holiness a coniiderable pre
sent, the choice was blotted out of the ca
lender.
