Deputy of the Knights of Wise Men for the state of Georgia paid death assessment of A. Cook ofChatham Lodge, amounting to one hundred and four dollars and fifty cents. White return ed last Sunday from Stafford’s South Carolina where he had been spending the summer with Mr. Lawton Russell. Judging from his appearance he must have had a first-class time in the piuey woods of the Palmetto State. Visitors to the market would be greatly pleased and find it much to their advantage to stop at Mr. H. Logan, the retail butcher stalls 67 and 68. He keeps on hand a fine supply of northern meats, fish, game and vegetables. He* endeavors to please his patrons and to judge from the number of customers he has it is very evident that he succeeds in pleasing them. Over-halls in great variety and cheap at L. Fried’s. Mr. Andrew Goebel a well-known German citizen, died very suddenly on Wednesday morning at 6 o’clock. He was taken with a fit of coughing which caused the bursting of a blood vessel which produc d deith in a few minutes The deceased was for many years dep uty jailor of this county. His funeral took place on Thursday, the remains being escorted to Bonaventure cemetery by Zerrubabel Lodge F A M., and the Germania Fire Insurance Company of which he was president. Dr. J.J. Waring has pititioned Council for permission to place a fountain on the corner of New Houston and Habersham Streets, He pro poses to donate the fountain to toe city and will give the city enough land from his adjoining lots to cover the space that the fountain would take on the street, and ask that the place be named Waring’s Place. Buildings were violently shaken. Chandeliers, pictures & . swayed ai d rattkd considerably in residences. .1 panic occurred in the public schools but fortunately no injuries are reported as having been sustained. DEATH OF ATKINS Mrs. Atkins wife of Col. James Atkins, died in Br oklyn, New York, on Tu<t day last where she had gone for medi cal treatment. ’lhe deceased w»s the daughter of Judge Lester King of Ohio, and a sis l er of 11 11. The bereaved family have the sincere sympathy of their friends in their great affliction. — - F - r v MEMORIAL s rvice. On Sunday last, at St. Stephen’s Epis copal church. Rev, J. J. Andrew preached a memorial sermon up >n the lives and characters of the members of the church who died during the year. A fitting tiibute was paid to the virtues of the departed ones. In his remarks the Rector paid a very high tribute to th it faithful follower of the cross, the lamented Henry L. Giles, who was se nior waiden of the church tor a great many years, and who by his devotion and sacrifices to everything that, tended to its welfare had won the love and es teem of the entire congregation. The R ctor Mr Andrew left on Monday’s steamer wi h the icmaius of his aunt who died in this city about thr< e years ago. The remains will be taken to Syra cuse, N. ¥., for final intermert. Our readers in common with the peo ple of Augusta will rejoice that the strike in Augusta by which hundreds of laboring people were thrown out of employment for over three mouths, paralyzing business in Augusta and causing much suffering among the strik ers. and pei haps others, is at an end. The trouble was between the cotton mill owners and their employes, and the terms of compromise agreed upon by them by which the mills will com mence operation on Monday s* em t" be fair and honorable to both sides. Fol lowing is the agreement arrived at. 1. The pass system and petty tyran nies complained of shall be abolished. 2. No former employe shall be de prived of work on account of his con nection with the Knights of Labor, or with the difficulty which caused the existing troubles, and no member of the Order shall discriminate against any employes because they do not belong to the Knights. 3. The manufacturers shall remit the rents due them during the strike and lockout until Nov, 6. 4 All difficulties hereafter shall be settled by artitration of a committee to be composed of two mill presidents and two employes, and in case they do not agree the committee is to select an umpire. Pending adjustment the em ployes shall continue to work. 5. In case of the discharge of an em ploye for cause the position or machine of such employe shall not be boycotted, 6.
