A White man bossing a gang of colored laborers who were engaged in loading aboard of one of the outing steam era some boxes of oranges when the boss ordered one of the men to break open a box and get him two dozen oranges, which was accordingly done, tut in doing so the color ed man had the misfortune to break an orange which he concluded to appropriate to bin own use. To such freedom the Bos objected and ordered it put back into the box, this he refused to do, whereupon h - was given his time and ordered by the Boss never to show his black face again on the wharf. The colored man thought this a little unfair and concluded b fore obeying the order to see if he could not get justice from a higher amhority. He laid the whole matter before “The Big Boss” who after hearing it concluded to investigate and •ee ifit was true or not. He had not to go far before he was convinced of its truthfulness, Here the scene changer! and the little boss wag given his discharge and ihe colored nasn w hetn he had ordered but a few monenU before to do an illegal act was restor. to duty. This is as it should be, always measure a person by the rule of good merit, and not as is too often the case by the color of his skin. Had the colored man not been able to prove his statement, no doubt he would now Ie serving out a sentence on the chain gang. —■■ «S ♦ The finest quality <>f Bath Sponges.
