Wcerishoffer, the dead speculator, will live in history as one of the most bril liant and daring of the Wall street mil lionaires. Like Gould, he began life in poverty. He started as an office boy, de veloped into a clerk, and finally blos somed out as a speculator. For twenty years this man has been engaged in the heaviest financial battles of modern times. The capitalists of the metropolis recognized Ins generalship and looked up to him as a leader. He was a hard fighter, and was generally successful. It is passing strange that such a man, gifted with a superb will-power, should have been slain in the most inglorious of con flicts and vanquished by the puniest of antagonists. This Colossus met his fate when he tackled the cigarette. A brief history of the struggle may serve to point a moral and convey a warning. Wceris hoffer gradually drifted into the habit of inveterate smoking. He smoked fifty cigarettes a day. He kept it up for sis teen years, innaling the smoke all the time. Years ago Woerishofier saw danger ahead. His head, heart, stomach and nerves remonstrated, protested, and begged him to change bis course. In their agony they cried out against the fiendish cigarette, and denounced it. Colossus grinned sardonically. When he got ready he would down the cigarette, and not before. Slowly but surely the coils of smoke twined around their vic tim, tightening their grip each day. The man’s heart turned into a big sponge sat urated with ni.otine. Still the smoker continued the fight. He would lie down ( when too feeble to stand and smoke, i while his heart beat, at the rate of 120 a j minute. He said; “I have a German i stomach, an American head; I am equal i to anything.” At last he became alarmed. I To his horror and amazement he found j that he could not give up the cigarette, i He tried again and again. He went to a I famous medical man and said: “You i shall have $50,000 in gold if you will (‘mancipate me from the cigarette.’’ The : physician worked hard, but it was no go. ' The big strong man,the giant who tossed | money kings about like babies, lay hope- I lessly crushed under a little rice-paper pigmy. “A remarkable case,” the inedi-. cal men say. Very; but there will be others like it. Hydrophobia Without a Can e. A few weeks ago Harry Gibson, a ; hotel boy in Chicago, was taken to the insane department of the county jail, suffering from a malady which seemed at times o resem le hydrophobia. It cannot be ascertained that young Gibson was ever bitten by a dog, either rapid or otherwic , yet he snapped his teeth and growled at people, frothed at the mouth and in every way gave evidence of suffering from rabies. Before Gib son’s removal to the jail he was cared for at the hotel and a porter named John Heillaud was detailed to watch him. He would argue with his attendant in a most rational manner, saying that there was no negjssjty fcr his being watched; but the moment the attendant turned his back Gibson would leap up on him and endeavor to bite him. After Gibson’s removal Heilland was re lieved from the duty of caring for the patient. He went to his room and spent the next forenoon in sleep. When he went to work he complained to his fellow porters of being ill, but thought nothing serious of it. The day follow ing, however, he was attacked with the same symptoms manifested by young Gibson and became violently mad and unmanageable. He frothed at the mouth and acted like a person having the hydrophobia, though at times he was perfectly rational. He declares that he was not bitten by Gibson, and had not been bitten by a dog. The at tacks recur at regular intervals each day. The cases will be thoroughly in vestigated. l— ..... The Only W:>y to Conquer Dyspepsia. It is perfectly preposterous to introduce pep sin andother artificial solvents into the stom ach, in the expectation that they will assist digestion by acting on the food itself. They will not. Nor is it possible thus to overcome dyspepsia. The only way to conquer that dis order, an 1 prevent the numerous diseases and disabilities which It assuredly provokes, is to renew the activity of gastric action by strengthening the st imvli.
