LONG CHASE FOR a MURDERER.
Captarad fcy Illa Victim’* Hr*cb»rs After
Tweoty-Ono Years.
A letter from Rome, Ga , says. John
and Lafayette Hardwick, having in
charge Corroll Mcßee, who killed their
brother 21 years ago, passed through
here this morning and are now at their
home in Cedar Bluff, Ala. In 1865,
Mcßee's father moved from Tennessee to
Cedar Bluff with his son Carroll The
latter always estimated himself the best
man in the community, and on reaching
his new h me and learning that one of
tho Hardwicks was the bully of tho
place, was anxious to fight him. He
boasted of his ability to throw Hardwick
in a wrestle. The boys urged him on
and went 10 the village store, where
young Hardwick and his brother Joe
were found. Mcßee here repeated his
boast, but Hardwick declined to enter
such a test. Then Mcßee, turning to
Joe Hurdwick, who was sitting on tho
counter, said, “If I cannot get Hard
wick to wrestle with me, I can throw
his brother." In tho attempt Mcßee
was thrown to tho ground. Crestfallen,
but still anxious to show his strength,
he attacked Joe again with the same re
sult. Mcßee then went out, and, put
ting his open pocketknife up his sleeve,
returned nnd said, “You may be able to
throw me, but you can't whip me," ac
companying the words with what ap
peared to be a blow of the fist, but really
leaving behind a fatal knife stab. Mc-
Bee ran to his horse, mounted it and
rode off. The other Hardwicks gave
pursuit, following him into Indian Ter
ritory and all over the West, finally, af
ter 21 years, capturing him and bringing
him back to the scene of his crime. The
prisoner now admits his identity with
the Mcßee who killed Joe Hardwick.
The Boat Dwellers of Japan.
Young people who live in London or
New York may fancy that our cities are
crowded, and that many families must
live without very much air to breathe
or space for the boys and girls to play
in. What would they say to the boat
dwellers of Japan? In that crowded
country hundreds of families spend
their lives and bring up their children
upon the water, and know nothing of
the land except as they make an occa
sional visit to it when obliged to pur
chase supplies or to attend to some un
usual business.
In every bay along the coast are found
hundreds, if not thousands, of small
craft called “junks " These are small,
flat-bottomed boats, and are owned and
inhabited by a man and his family,
just as houses are in other parts of the
world. Their business is the transpor
tation of goods and merchandise of all
kinds, and their navigation is a sort of
family affair. One traveller says:
“I have seen a boat twenty feet long
most adroitly managed by three chil
dren all under seven ye*’ - # of age. I am
told that, notwithstanding their aptness
toswimmingmany boatmen getdrowned,
for no boat ever goes to another’s aid,
nor will any boatman ever save another
from drowning, because, as he says, it is
all fate, and he who interferes with fata
will be severely punished in some way.”
In tho Congo Region.
“The negroes of the Congo Free
States of Africa," says Henry M. Stan
ley, “don’t resent the invasion of civili
zation. They like it. They like tho
methods of civilized dress. You will
find Gen. Wolseley’s fine coats on a na
tive, Lord Alcester's clothes cn the buck
of another negro. They do up and fix
thousands of old coats in Whitechapel,
London, and send them out to the na
tives. At first the negroes merely wore
an Admiral’s hat and a big stick, but
now they have found out that these ar
ticles are not suflicient. The Germans
are very sharp at trade. The way thoy
manaue is: They invite tho chiefs to a
grand breakfast. They have a room
furnished in apple pie order, grand mir
rors, sofas, chairs, carpets, kniekkuacks.
and bric-a-brac. Then the native chief
looks artmnd nnd says: ‘This is very
nice. I wish 1 could have something
like it. Will you sell it?' ‘Yes,’ says
the German; ‘how much oil will you
give me?’ When the price has been
fixed the whole contents of the rooms
were carried bodily away to the black
chief’s house and the next morning tho
German gives another breakfast.”

In the for.n of a genial medicinal cordial, Hos
