FIRE IN COLUMBIA.
Two Alarms in one Day.—Little Dauingo
Done.
Two fire alarms were sounded in Col
ombia, S. C., Tuesday. The first caused
some excitement the fire being in a
closely-built and handsome block on
Main street. The stovepipe in the art
gallery of W. A. Reckling fired the roof,
and things looked badly for awhile
Streams were soon playing on the roof,
and the fire was easily extinguished. The
loss is slight, is due chiefly to damage
from water, and is fully covered by in
j surance.
The other fire was in a small wooden
building in the southern part of the town,
occupied by Frank Jackson. He was al
his regular work close where, his wife had
gone on some errand, and their three
children were locked up in the house •
Fortunately, the fire was soon discovered,
else the children would probably have
been burned to death.

SNOWDRIFTS IN MINNESOTA.
The superintendent of the Winona
and St. Peter railroad states that between
Mankono and Tracy, Minnesota, snow
, drifts are in many cases six feet above
I the telegraph poles, and that linemen
have had to splice scantling to the tops
I of the poles to get the wires up where
they could be used. He says many of
the drifts are twenty-five feet* deep, and
EA packed so hard that the company dares
V not send a snow-plow through them
F One thousand men are now at work shov
I ding snow between Mankono and Tracy
and the line will not be cleared for sev
eral days.
IS THERE ANY HOPE?
New auJ Important Opinion* of Pulmo
nary Experts!
CAN THE UNIVERSAL CONSUMPTION BE SUC
CESSFULLY TREATED?
Dr. Burgeon, a leading French doctor, has
a new treatment for consumption!
He gives an enema of carbonic acid and
sulphuretted hydrogen gases, the latter gas
carrying the former into every part of the
threat and lungs.
This treatment, too, is directed at effects
—the cause remains undisturbed.
What this cause is has been stated by per
haps the highest pulmonary authority in the
World," (. c., the Brompton Hospital for Con
sumptives, in Ixm lon, Eng.
This malady every year carries off from
one-seventh to one-fifth of the entire popu
lation of England.
Dr. Payne, At. D., M. R. C. I’., London, is
authority for this statement.
The same or a greater proportion of deaths
obtains in America.
Dr. Payne also says that one half the total
number of deaths from all other causes
have seeds of this disease in the system which
only require some irritant to develop!
Dr. Hermann Brehmer, an eminent Ger
man authority, says that consumption is
caused by deficient nutrition of the lungs,
by poor blood.
These authorities cannot be disputed. The
medical world recognizes them. The uric
acid is the irritant in the blood that causes
the development of the seeds which Dr.
Brehmer says lie dormant in the blood.
Every [article of blood which passes through
the lungs and heart, also goes through
the kidneys, and if they are in the leant de
ranged they cannot rid the blood of its kill
ing poison. The thousand little hair-like
sewer tubes of the kidneys very easily get
blocked up and diseased; and when they do
they corrupt instead of purifying the blood.
Kidney disease may exist, and yet no pain
occur in that organ, because it is deficient in
nerves of .sensation.
Dip your finger in acid every day and it
soon festers and is destroyed. Send acid-poi
soned blood through the lungs every second,
and they soon give way.
The Brompton Hospital investigation i
showed that 52 per cent, of the victims of j
consumption were afflicted with deranged
kidneys, which permitted the uric acid poi
son to remain in the blood and irritate the i
lungs. This uric acid isalwaysfightingevery
vital organ, and if there be any inherent
weakness in the lungs it inevitably cause
pneumonia, cough ami consumption. ■
The real cause of pulmonary troubles being ■
so authoritatively shown to be faulty even
though unsuspected action of the kidneys,
explains why, in order to mast t the dreaded '
consumption, one must rid the blood of the
uric acid irritant which inflames and burns
up the lung substance. For this purpose j
there is nothing equal t > that great specific,
Warner’s safe cure. The remedy has now
the favor of medical men all over the world
purely on its merits. We have no doubt that
if the kidneys are kept in natural action, con
sumption and a great many other diseases,
caused by uric acid, will not only be cured
but will be prevented.
When the kidney is healthy, no albumen
appears in the water, but albumen is found
in the water of more than half of those who
die of consumption 1
This, then, is the condition of things that |
always [irocedes consumption: First, weak
ened kidneys; se .'ond, retained uric acid,
poisoning th * blood; third, the development i
of disease in the lungs bv the irritant acids i
passing through them. Then there is a little |
ccugh in the morning; soon thick, yellow
matter is spit up, followed by loss of flesh i
ami strength, with dreadful night sweats;
ami when the patient goes to his school
physician for help, he is put on cod liver oil,
which his stomach, weakened also by uric
acid in the blood, < annot digest. Because ;
there is no pain present in the kidneys,
the [ atient does not think they are affected,
but the kidney acid is doing its work every
minute, every hour, day and night, and by
and-by the disease of the lungs has advanced
until pus is developed, then come hemor
rhages, and at last the glassy stare which do
notes that the end is near!
A post-mortem examination of such cases
shows that the terrible uric acid has com
pletely destroyed the substance of the lung.
It is impossible to cure lung diseases when
the blood is poisoned with uric a id.

The Scene of the Evictions.
The Parish of Glenbeigh lies far away
down in the extreme south of the king
dom of Kerry. Ireland. It is as de o
late a spot as can oe found on a 1 the
western coast. The nearest town is
Castleisland, notorious as the heart and
centre of the most disaffected district
in Ireland. To reach it from Killarnsy
a long journey across country of twenty
miles must be taken, and from Tralee
the distance is only five miles less The
village, which is the sceneof the present i
evictions, lies in a ravine among the
hills, situated some height above the
sea, in a bleak, e posed situation. For
the tourist in search of a picturesque
wilderness, the locality is attractive
enough, and there is plenty of shooting
on the hills to satisfy the sportsman, but
for the husbandman it is as undesirable
location as could be well imagined.
Like many hundred thousand acres of
land in the West of Ireland, it is a waste
of bog and rock. But for the constant
labor of the cottiers who are nestled
among the boulders it would in a very
few years relapse into a waste which
might afford pasturage for snipe, but
for nothing else.
Didn’t Wan’t To be Misunderstood;
They were sitting on the sofa closer
than brothers, gazing unutterable things
into each other’s eyes, when Augustus
gained possession of one of Angelina’s
hands, which, causing no protest, the
other was soon imprisoned. Then the
ecstay of silent companionship w r as re
sumed, only to be broken by her timid
whisper:
“Gus, dearest, I want to ask a ques
tion.”
‘ Go on; ask me anything— anything!"
“Well, Gussie, if I should take one of
my hands away to wipe my nose, you
wouldn’t think I was mad, would you
dear?”
