•waiting for the obsequies of the noted

only awarded by the sight of a procession
that, except in size, differed only in a few
minor details from any ordinary funerals.
jpSflrtujday evening the master ofeeremou-
iefc estimated that 20,000 sympathizers
would be in line. Whether the absence
of the anarchist widower dampened the
' enthusiasm, or the fact the police were
taking extraordinary precautions to quell
disorder, had a like effect, the denu n
stration fell far short of its promoter’s
predictions. Including the persons in
one hundred and seventy-seven carriages
and buggies, there were probably 5,000
in the procession. The prohibition of
the red flags was scrupulously observed.
A few banners were carried and they
were furled and totally hidden in black
draping. Not a dozen mourners were in
uniform. A single band furnished tin*
only music in the procession. The police
men were almost wholly kept out of
sight, and the entire affair was character
ized by sombre decorum.

SIGNIFICANT!
Home of the Last Public Opinions of a
(•rent Man.
New York Correspondence Cleveland Leader j
One has a most excellent opportunity to j
study “man’’ as represented by the average ;
New Yorkers. Among the wealthy classes,
V' rv many of thorn have the waxy skin,
dropsical flesh, and “purled eyes” that are
indicative of serious kidney affection, j
“Bright’s disease” is plainly written on their
faces Since General Logan’s death the sub
ject of rheumatism is being discussed by the
medical profession.
Every intelligent person, with any knowl
e ige of the human system, is well aware that
it tho kidneys are in goo 1 condition ali un
necessary material is regularly carried off i
by them. If not, various acids, such as uric
acid, one of the chief causes of rheumatism, i
are loft in excess, creating deposits that cause
all sorts of chronic organic diseases. It
would seem, therefore, that rheumatism, like
dropsy, is not a diseas \ but the result of a
disease, and it is safe to >ay that if tho
st itnach and kidneys are kept in h althtul
condition, there will be uo deaths from rheu
matism.
General Logan was well aware that his
disease was of the kidneys, and once ex
pressed himself in indignant terms at the
folly of doctors treating him for rheumatism,
when it was the kidneys that caused his
attacks. The high living and the excesses in
all things prevalent among wealth}’- men in
large cities, especially in Now \ ork, is the
chief cause for Bright’s disease, and the aris
tocratic trouble known as rheumatism, even
ns insufficient and improper food bring about
the same results among the very poor.
The above article, which we reproduce be
cause of its general interest, is very signifi
cant. The public believes that rheumatism j
is an effect of diseased blood, this disease be- i
iug caused by uric acid or kidney poison.
Enough of this is developed daily to kill sev- |
oral men, and if it is not re nov d by the kid
neys as fast as formed, it gradually ruins the
health.
This fact is a scientific demonstration.
If do'tors do not admit it, it is probably
he aiiso they do n >t wish to attract atten
tion to the tneua e deranged kidneys, offers
to tho general h nlth, since they have no
authorized specific for these organs.
General Logan knew what his real trouble j
was, and he recognized the nonsense of treat
ing the effects —the real seat of the disease !
was the kidneys. Senator Sittig, of Illinois,
whose vote elected Logan Senator after four
months of balloting, tells us that Logan often
comnlained to him of great distress in his
ki ineys. Pisea-e of the kidneys always ;
produces rheumatism, and besides that, it
cau-63 paralysis, apoplexy, impoteucy,
stomach and blood disorders, brain troubles,
female complaints and countless other dis
eases which would almost never develop if
the blood wai kept free of uric acid or kidney
poison.
These facts the public recognizes even
though medical gentlemen, for very evident
reasons, will not publicly acknowledge them
lest perchance,some proprietary medicine like
Warner's safe cure, now admitted to be tho
only scientific specific, will got the benefit.
Fie on such bigotry! It lias been authori
tatively stated time and again that there can
be no real sound health if there is any false
action of the kidneys. Insurance companies
refuse millions of risks on this ground alone,
hence it is that there is such universal popu
larity given to the great preparation named
—a popularity that is ba-e.l upon intrinsic
merit.
Too much dependence m oil professional
advice, • especially in matters over which
medical men a Imit they have no power, too
often results very disastrously, but of wliat
use to the victim is experience gained by fa
tal disaster i
How much better it is to be guided by au
unprejudiced public opinionin su h matters.
Had Logan been so guided, he might have
been spare 1 many years.
Mns. Annie Sheldon Coomisks, author
of that clever book, “As Common Mor
tals,” lias just completed a now and real
istic study of New York social life.

Disorders Which Affect the Kidneys
Are among the mo it formidable known. Lila- I
betes, Bright’s disease, gravel and other com- !
plaints of the urinary organs, are not ordina
rily cured in severe eases, but they may be
aver. ed by timely medication. A useful stim
ulant for the urinary glands hr>s ever been
found in Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, a medi
cine which not only affords the requisite
stimulus when they become inactive, but in'
c: cases their vigor and secretive power. By
increasing the activity of the kidneys and
biadder, this medi ine has the additional ef
fect of expelling from the blood impuri.ies
which it is the peculiar office of those organs
to eliminat; and pass off. The Bitters is also
a puriiie and strengthener of the bowels, an
invigoran of the stomach, and a matchless
remedy for biliousness, and fever and ague. It
countei acts a ten iency 1 1 premature decayand
sustains and comforts the aged and infirm.
