Nine Men Murdered
The Tyhee Railroad now being built
through the action of the contractor,
has been a death trap fur the p >or
laborers at work thereon. The matter
has been before the grand jury and the
Morning News tells the horrible story
in the following forcible language:
•‘No true bill was returned in the
caue, but Salicitor General dußignou
stated that the testimony of the physi,
ci ins showed that the laborers had b en
shockingly treated: The (doctors s-id
that the cases were the worst instances
of inhumanity that ever came to their
notice.
9 ne.r es were brought up to the city
from McQueen’s I-l md in January, and
were put off at the Baltimore steamship
wharf and there left. Everyone of the
men was half nude half starved and half
dead, and subs quently every one of
them did die in the infirmary Before
they did die. however they seated that
when they got. sick, the sub contractor
named Lang, for whom they were work
ing, refused to giie them provisions,
saying that he could not ass -rd to do so,
when they were not working. They had
tn sleep ou the island, and at night the
b >ats were chained so that none of
laborers could escape.”
It is said that there is no statute un
der which an indictment can be drawn
to meet this case by which the human
monster guilty of such cruelty can be
brought to justice. To our mind it is
clear murder, as the sub contractor
Lang must have known that his action '
would result in the death of the men
who were stricken down in his employ.
In the name of humanity let the law be
made elastic enough to bring the guilty
! [arty to the bar of justice to answer for
his luonstrous crime.
