A handsomely dressed white woman gave a colored woman a baby to hold a few days since, while she stepped around thecorm r. Several parties want the little one, but the colored woman puts in a claim evidently having learned who the naughty mother is. Abrams, Esq-, a prominent attorney at law shot and killed his friend Fonda, a prominent official of the Central Railroad is -greatly deplored by the community. The mental anguish of Mr. Abrams it the unfortunate termination of the day’s pleasure is said to be ter rible in the extreme. The market committee, the pub lic will regret to hear, has reported favorably on the petitioners of the huckster to drive the street hawk ers who sell vegetables, oysters, prawns, shrimp, crabs, etc., from the business of supplying families with these articles. Every family will be compelled to have a servant should the recommendation pass. We will say more upon this subject text week. The Acme Al The Theatre. Tlje-xcme colored Amateur Comedy Company gave their grand exhibition at the’Theatre on Monday night last to •a house that was riot calculated to in spire enthusiasm among the company who had the burden of expense to bear. The members showed great enterprise in their efforts t • entertain the p'ublic, and they should be encouraged The singers and music seemed to be obliv ious to the presence of each other. Mr C. W. Alston was the favorite of the evening and rendered his part exceed ingly well, especially that in “Uncle Ned’s Cabin.” Miss Gordon and Messrs. Andrews and Leonard did well in the “Absent Lover.” Gn the whole how ever it was very obvious that the com pany needs some severe practice as to ’he manners of the stage. The case of criminal libel against James A. Sykes, was tried in the Superior Court on Wednesday last and resulted in his conviction. The charge against Mr. Sykes was that as editor ot the Phoenix he publish ed Peter Donegal, a letter carrier, as a viper, a loafer, a hybrid and a dis grace io the po-tal service. Sykes acknowledged that he was the pub lisher. but claimed through his counsel that the article was not li belous. The jury thought otherwise and a line of .S2OO or six months imprisonment was imposed by the Judge. The fine was paid and the defendant released from custody. 'I om Fogarty who committed the murderous assault on E. J. Kiefer, shooting him five times on March 7, was on trial in the Superior Court yesterday. The jury was out all night and at the time of our going to press no verdict had been agreed upon. Horrible Attempt of a Man to Kill Ru Wife and Child. At an early hour on Sunday morning last William Emery whilst in a state of frenzy caused by drink and domestic troubles assaulted his' wife and child whilst they were: asleep in bed by striking both of them over the head with the flat of I an axe, and proceeded to police headquartersand surrendered him self. He stated atthe barracks that his reason for the crime was that his wife had determined to leave him, because he had ordered her sister to ’leave the house, the latter woman being the cause of their troubles. The victims have been in critical condition up to the time we go to press. Emery was committed to jail to await the result of his mur derous assault, when the grand jury will take action in the case. Four Years Hard Labor James Wyattt, the bigamist received the full extent of the law, for bigamy, in the Superior Court on last Thursday. Wyatt it will be remembered by read ers of the Tribune ran off with a daughter of onrfofour well known <it - zeus several weeks a-jo after having married her, the original Mrs. Wyatt being above terra firma in full posses sion of her rights as such. The culprit was arrested in .Atlanta and brought back for trial. He pleaded not guilty when arraigned but upon a survey of’ the witness s present he concluded to plead guilty.
