They did not gain any laurels, and w»re not met by a Brass band and a delegation of citizens. In fact they only won two games out of sixteen. They will play the Charles ton's here to-day. As the “over hom ers” are of about the same calibre as the home team, tVere will be plenty of fun for the critical small base ball boy Dr. Benj. F. Sheftall, who has been repeatedly honored by his fel low citizens, has been appointed by the Secretary of the Treasury, Sanitary Inspector at Sapelo station and left yesterday for his new field of labor. We wish him success. I'm excursion on last Sunday given >y Rev. U L Houston’s congregation to Abeicorn church; was quite an enjoy able affair; and tho-e who attended had 1 stood time. The huckster’s Ordinance. ' The chairman of the Market Cotn '‘Hftee presented an ordinance to t e City ( ouncil for its approval which s is plain and unequivocal legislation ■•gainst one of the poore-t cla-ses of bivannah spe pie, the hucksters. The • prop 'Bed ordinance will not only work hardship and suffering among this poor but very useful people, but it will, if it siould be approved by council, become a somce of gieat nnnovauce tojiouse keepers, by forcing them to go to the g« n ral market which is situated from a half mile to one mile and a had fr m the residences of a majority of our citi zens, tor ti e common but necessary ar tides of food now brought to their doors early every morning by the enterprising hucksters. Besides the foregoing whois it that is bold enough to siy that if the ordin ance shou'd pass it will not increase the cost of living among st ven eighths of the people? The idea of placing such articles as green corn, okra, tomatoes, peas, potatoes, etc,, in the hands of a few monopolists, who will compel! the masses to go to the general market lor them, or do without, would be absurd wore it not -in outrage. It is to b • hoped • hat our ‘‘city fath ers ’ will reflect well before passing the ordinance to harass, atiuoy, and injure the people. For underwear, L. Fried's the place. Try L. Ile holds forth on the corner of Liberty and Price streets and has a congregation of several thousand every night. Kit is a doctor, he is a preacher, he is a stump speaker, he is a puzzle. He brings everybody to him. The young and the old, the rich and the poor—especially the poor —go to Kit every night. Men, women and children are seen nightly with chairs, boxes and benches, hurrying to see and to hear Kit. The churches.are deserted and Kit has done it all. The people would rather hear Kit's plain talk than to hear the preachers preach. Dr. Kit sells medicine and gives away money, diamond rings, clothing and food. He was poor once but claims to be a millionaire noyv- Overhalls iu great variety and eheap at L. Fried. ANNIVERSARY of THEFIRST BRY AN BAPTIST CHURCH SUNDAY SCHOOL On Bunday night last the First Bry an Baptist church Sunday school cele b ated its 65th anniversary in a very fitting manner. The exercises consist ed of scriptural reading by the pa-i'T Rev. U. L’ Houston, essays by the tt-achers, singing and recitations by the school also an address from Mr. J* H. Brown, superintendent of the First Af rican Baptist church. Mr Wm Riv ets the superintendent and the c -rps of teachers have done much toward bring ing the school up to its present good standing, the singing of which was said to be the best it, had ever rendered There were about four hundred pupils present. A beautiful feature of the ceb bration was a rep'esentation of the Star of Bethlehem. An inscription was placed on a point of the Star, bearing the name of each essay as it was an nounced, as follows: ‘ Birth of Christ” “Life of Christ,” Death of Christ;” “Burial of Christ,” and the Resurrec tion of Christ,” the center piece being inscribed “Ascens on of Christ.” the whole presenting a splendid effect when completed. Too much praise cannot be awarded Mr. H. F. Johnson, the efficient mana ger of the school, for his untiring efforts displayed in making the cele bration one of the grandest ever wit nessed in our city. m i > i m Go to L.
