I CHARLES SUMNER’S KINDNESS. It Was the Means of Saving one Man from a Drunkard’a Grave. [From the Boston Ilocord.] “Do I remember Andrew J. Rob- ' quoth an old State politician, "“les. He had a checkered career, poor man. Bin with all his shortcomings he was a bright, indeed a brilliant man. was a great jM>liti<;ian years ago and lot only took extraordinary interest in he questions of the day, but knew inti (lately all the prominent public n>en. le wars well read, intelligent, and a ;ood talker, but he had a failing. He ouhl not be depended upon, and at imes was helpless. “He used to hang around tlie State Re •üblican headquarters from morning until night throughout the campaign, nd campaigns lasted in those days marly five months. It was during the nti-slavery days, when everybody was t the highest pitch of excitement. I BXBember one day in particular, when a umber of prominent politicians were Bsembled at headquarters, among them Jharles Sumner ami Henry Wilson. Sumner was in the rear room, Wilson a the front. In walked Roberts. He alked in a loud voice and disturbed the rhole assembly. Stepping into the ear room, he spied Sumner in earnest onversation with a friend. Giving him tremendous slap on the shoulder, he touted: ‘D you, Sumner, how are OU? Why don’t you be as hearty and enial as your friend Wilson ? “The effect of this rough handling of lumner can readily be imagined by hose who remember or have read of the ignified and scholarly man. It was ot only a shock but an insult. Sum er turned as white as a sheet, but said Othing. He realized Robert’s eondi- 1 iOn and wisely kept his peace. Roberts 'as severely reprimanded and turned lit of the room. “It was not long after this that Rob rts came to want and grief. He was itually destitute. He looked hungry nd was poorly clad. In despair he line to me one day for work or advice. , he big tears rolled down his cheeks as ' e told me how destitute and degraded j e was, ami how he longed to reform, i told him I had no work, and advised im to go to Sumner. “ ‘Go to Sumner,’ ho said. ‘Oh, no, insulted Sumner a short time ago. I m’t go.’ “ ‘Yes, you can,’ ” I said. ‘Go to him ist as you have come to mo. 'fell him ankly the whole story and he will help JU.’ “Roberts did as I advised. About 10 clock the next morning he buttoned is shabby coat around his neck, to hide is flannel shirt, and made his way to ie man he had grossly insulted but a iort time before. Sumner, it is well nown, was a late riser, and seldom * reakfasted before 11 o’clock. He re lived the unfortunate man kindly, and, iviting him to breakfast, listened itiently to his story. Roberts told mo :terward that it was the first square ■ meal he had eaten for a long time. In I less than two days Roberts was given a position in the navy yard, and hence forth he was a different man. When ho told mo later his experience with Sum ner that morning his eyes filled with tears and his voice trembled with emo tion. It was a magnanimous act on the part of Sumner, and an outward ex pression of his true character. “It was the turning point in Robert’s career. Only a few’ months ago ho de livered one of the best temperance speeches I ever heard in my life. Up ■to the day of his death, which occurred ■ quite recently, he had a great- venera ■ tion for the memory of Sumner, the ■ man who wits so generous and kind to ■ him in trouble.” “Jenkins, you are posted in church Hmatfers, aren’t you?” inquired one travel ling man of another. “Yes, more or le*s.” B*'Well, who are the laymen of any church ?” a “The laymen? They are fair samples of the spontaneous expressions with which thousands give utterance to their sense of gratitude tor the inestimable boon of health which has been restored to them by the use of this world-famed medicine. John E. Segar, of Millenbeck, Va., writes: gft 1 ft ft “ My wife had been suffering for two or three Av W years with female weakness, and had paid T . out one hundred dollars to physicians with- IHROWN uW&V out relief. Three bottles of your rIRTHIV nfinid ‘Favorite Prescription’ restored me to per- LAninLl uuun. health. I treated with Dr. , for nine months, without receiving any benefit. The ‘ Favorite Prescription ’ is the greatest earthly boon to us poor Buffering women.” Man/Timcs women call on their family physicians, suffering, as they imagine, one from dyspepsia, another from heart disease, another from liver or kidney disease, another from nervous exhaustion or prostration, another with pain here or there, and in this way they all present ahka to themselves and their easy-going and indifferent, or over-busy doctor, separate anti distinct diseases, for which he preacrib*; his rills and potions, assuming them to be such, when, in reality, they are all only sv TO Pt° fflS caused by some womb disorder. The physician, ignorant of the cause of suffering, encourages his practice until large bills are made. The suffermjr patient gets no better, out probably worse by reason of the delay, wrong treatment and consequent complications. A proper medicine, like Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription, directed to the cause would have entirely removed the disease, thereby dispelling all those distressing symptoms, and instituting comfort instead of prolonged misery. 3 n Mrs. F. F. Morgan, of IVo. 71 Lexington St., Boston, Mass., suys: "Five years ago 1 •wi uuiRiYM wag a dregful oU fferer from uterine troubles. FAILED Having exhausted the skill of three phy ■ hiuuu, sicians. I was completely discouraged, and so wea k I could with difficulty cross the room alone. I l>egau taking Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription and using the local treatment recommended in his ‘Common Sense Medical Adviser.’ I commenced to improve at once. In three months I was perfectly cured, and have had no trouble since. I wrote a letter to’ my family paper, briefly mentioning how my health had been restored, and offering to send the full particulars to any one writing me for them, and enclosing a stamped-en velopc for reply. 1 have received over four hundred letters. In reply, I have described my case and the treatment used, and have earnestly advised them to ‘do likewise.’ From a great many I have received second letters of thanks, stating that they had commenced tlie use of ‘Favorite Prescription.’had sent the $1.50 required for the ‘Medical Adviser,’ and had applied the local treatment so fully and plainly laid down therein, and were much better already.” THE OUTGROWTH OF A VAST EXPERIENCE. The treatment of many thousands of cases of those chronic weaknesses and distressing ailments peculiar to females, at the Invalids' Hotel and Surgical Institute, Buffalo, N. Y., has afforded a vast experience in nicely adapting and thoroughly testing remedies for the cure of woman's peculiar maladies. Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription is the outgrowth, or result, of this great and valuable experience. Thousands of testimonials, received from patients and from physicians who have tested it in the more aggravated and obstinate eases which bad baffled their skill, prove it to be the most wonderful remedy ever devised for the relief and cure of suffering women. It is not recommended as a “ cure-all,” but as a most perfect Specific for woman's peculiar ailments. As a powerful, invigorating tonic, it imparts strength to the whole system, and to the uterus, or womb and its ap pendages, in particular. For overworked, *‘worn-out,” ‘‘run-down." debilitated teach ers. milliners, dressmakers, seamstresses, "shop-girls.'' housekeepers, nursing moth ers. and feeble women generally, Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription is the' great est earthly boon, being unequalled as an appetizing cordial and restorative tonic.
