The Actress and the Druggist.
The Philadelphia Evening Call telle
this little story of real life: There is an
actress well known in this city who has
won distinction by sheer force of merit.
About twelve years ago the compahy in
which, she was the star became stranded
in one of the interior towns. Their
baggage was seized to satisfy a claim of
S9O. In their extremity, a druggist of
the town stepped forward and advanced
the money, and the star and her com
pany went on their way rejoicing. The
druggist was not a public-spirited man;
he was not noted for benevolent freaks}
he had never mingled with theatrical
people. But he had seen the actress
per form, and was pleased with her and
with the conscientious manner in wliich
she tried to give satisfaction. He ac
cepted no security for the money which
. he advanced; it was not refunded to him,
and in course of time he forgot all about
it.
Last winter the druggist met with
financial disaster, and the Sheriff pasted
a bill upon his premises.' Before the
day of sale a lawyer of the place called
upon the druggist. “Do you remem
ber,” he asked, “advancing money to
the actress, because her
baggage had been attached?” “Yes,”
replied the druggist; “about twelve
years ago.” ‘‘Well,” replied the lawyer,
“I was in New York last week and up
•> at the hotel where she was registered.
She did not know me, but the name of
the town recalled some old memories.
She asked the clerk for an interview
with me, and told me why she had sent
for me. She mentioned your name, and
asked if you were still alive and in busi
ness. She said that she wanted to re
turn that loan. 1 told her that it would
be very acceptable to you, as you were
in financial distress. ‘lt has been care
less in me,’she replied, ‘but I do not
, want him to think that I did not prop
erly appreciate his kindness to me, an
utter stranger. Fortune has favored
me; I have made money and J have
saved it. I wish to pay that claim with
interest. Will you take the money?’”
“I consented, and I am hero to pay
you the money.’’’' “I am sure I am
thankful for it,” replied the druggist.
“And yet such a small sum as ninety
dollars will hardly—“My dear
tdr, ” interrupted the lawyer, gave
me not ninety dollars, but nine hundred
—ten dollars interest, almost, for every
dollar you advanced. ” The money sat
isfied the attachment, and left him SSOO
with which to begin the battle of Ufa
anew.

Armour, the Chicago beef and pork
man, won a big victory over the sixty
meat market men of Akron, Ohio, by
bringing the latter to terms.
About four weeks ago a committee of
I Knights of Labor notified all the butch
ers of Akron that they must not sell
Armour’s meat in future. The butchers
complied with the request, and a car
load of Armour’s meat on the track j
spoiled. Armour subsequently came on
and vainly tried to sell his meat. ,
A few weeks ago he opened three re
tail markets in Akron. It was predicted
that he would run no trade, and tho
openings of the markets were attended
with much excitement. But contrary to
predictions, hundreds of people, includ
ing many Knights, swarmed into the
markets and bought the meat, which
was retailed at four cents per pound be-
I low local price.
The Akron butchers agreed to buy
Armour’s meat as before the trouble if
he would withdraw his retail markets,
which will be done at once.

Is.it Really Consumption?
Many a case supposed to be radical lung dis
ease is really one of iver complaint and Indi
gestion; but, unless that diseased liver can be
restored to healthy a non, it will so clog the
lungs with corrupting matter as to bring on
their speedy decay, aud then indeed we have
consumption, which is scrofula of the lungs in
its worst form, Nothing can be more happily
calculated to nip this danger in the bud than
is Dr. Pierce’s ‘‘Golden Medical Discovery.”
