A colored maa was elected Common- 1
wealth Attorney of the city of Norfolk, 1
Va - , a few days ago, a noble example 1
for colored men of Savannah. If col- i
tired men would go to the Court House ]
and return their names now, and pay ]
their poll tax in the fall they would
amount to something here—will they
do it, that’s the question, 1

The fire on Monday night last on
Broughton street was very disastrous, ,
entirely destroying the stores of D. U eis
bein, dry goods and Edward Lovell s
Sons, hardware dealers. Krouskoff the ,
great millinery and dry goods house and '
Sternberg the Jeweler also received '
considerable damage. The loss is esti
n wed at about 875,000. The origin of
the fire is not known! The water supply
was very limited which has caused 1
great complaint.

Still Holding Cut
The strike of the lumber longshore
men for an advance of 10 cents an hour
which was ordered by the Union on the
26th ultimo is still in progress. The
men are firm in their demand and there
seems to be no signs of weakening on
their part! Some of the men employed
by the stevedores we have been inform
ed are receiving the wages demanded by
the striking longshoremen. We have
been told that lumber vessels laden by
inexperienced hands may become endan
gered in rough weather at sea. The
strikers deny that they are willing to
accept an advance of 5 cents as a com
promise measure as rumored.
Disturbing the Military.
The Chatham Light Infantry returned
from Charleston un Wednesday night
last and wai met at the 8 F & W Ry.»
depot by the Lone Btar Cadets, and the
doling Chathams a company composed
of boys. XV hen the companies reached
the corner of Price on Liberty street
•nd while crossing from the Railroad
track to the side walk a white man ac
companied by two women rudely seized
the sergeant who was right guide and
ordering him to “move out of the ladies
way.’ 'lhe fellow who was in citizens
dress claimed he was a policeman but
was unceremoniously hustled aside. But
for the females with him who begged for
him he would certainly have been ar
rested and taken to the barracks as he
deserved. An effort is being made to
ascertain his name, and if he a police
man charges will likely be preferred
against him.
The closing concert at the Beach In
stitute on May 27, was very creditable
in every respect. The program consisted
of choruses, songs, duets etc., furnishing
an evening of real enjoyment for all who
attended.
In Defense of his Sister.
A very serious cutting scrape oc
curred on Thursday last about one
o’clock ata house on Jones street near
Lincoln a part of which was occupied
by “Billy” Williams and his wife be
tween whom some domestic trouble
was brewing, when it is stated the
former resorted to brute force to settle
the matter. Mrs. Williams appealed
to her brother Sam Burke who keeps a
shop near by. The brother remonstra
ted against the outrageous treatment of
the sister when Williams assaulted him.
with some deadly weapon. Burke used
a knife in his defense and the result
was that his assailant received a wound
in the side several inches ia ieagth,
which was properly attended to by a
physician, and though serious is not
likely to prove fatal.' Burke was ar
rested and gave bonds.
A VERY SERIOUS COMPLAINT
Aiderman Beid has called Council’s
attention to a very serious matter in
regard to the Quarantine regulations
this port, He said thot it had been re
ported to him that the Quarantine Sta
tion was ruo in the interest of the Tow
Boat company and Paulsen & Co. He
also stated that “he understands from
various sources that the quarantine reg
ulations are not strictly enforced, that
boats have upon several occasions visit
ed the quarantine grounds, and that
they have been tied up at the wharves
there. He has also been told that Ste
dores are in the habit of visiting the
station, and have several times boarded
vessels while at quarantine, and .that
parties come and go from the island
without restraint. He had heard, he
said, that stevedores have taken supplies
to vessels at quarantine. Flagrant viola
tioos of the law like these Aiderman
Reid felt it his duty to report at once
to the Health Officer, and he did s®.
He has the names of the parties, he
stated, from whom he learned the condi
tion of affairs, and he has submitted
them to the Sanitary Board-” The
matter has been referred to the Mayor
for investigation, when it is hoped the
public will know more of it. The ex
perience of the people of Savannah is
liowever, that these referred investiga
tions amount to nothing—that is they
are never permitted to know the result
of the investigations. The people should
demand a report from their servants
when anytliieg affecting their welfare
has been under consideration. When
they fail to demand what belong to
them they become the veriest of slaves
