A WAT REPORTERS RAVE.
How a Secret Meeting Wm Re
ported.
n _____
fFrom the Chicago Inter-Ocean.]
I remember one occasion, more than
twenty years ago, when the representa
tives of several papers were directed to
learn all they could about a secret cau
cus. Each man was on his mettle, bni
all were kept at a safe distance from the
room in which the noted politicians met.
When the meeting was called to order
the reporters were in despair, because
they were under guard, as it were, in s
room separated from the assembly hall
by a wide corridor, or so situated that
they could see nothing and hear nothing,
But it so happened that along that side
of the hall were a number of low windows.
The heavy ground glass prevented those
who used the corridor from seeing what
was going on within, but admitted the
light.
As the seven or eight newspaper men
were sitting disconsolate, looking across
to the caucus room, the shadow of a man
appeared on the glass of the almost con
tanous window extending along the side
Some one had mounted the chair to ad
dress the chairman of the meeting, and
the boys recognised him by his gestures.
In the midst of what appeared to be a
rather excited speech he was pulled down
from behind, and another man a little
further to the front popped up. The new
speaker was recognised by the contour ol
hu head and the cut of Ids clothes. The
reporters at once scattered to different
points of observation, and when the cau
cus ended they had a pretty fair record
of the persons who had spoken. Know
ing how the speakers stood on the ques
tion before the meeting, they made uj!
from their pantoniine certain prognosti
cations as to what was said, on which
they interviewed every man whose shad
ow they had seen on the ground glass ol
the windows.
Going to one man, a reporter would
say, “ Baker talks to much with his
Lands, doesn’t he?” and then he would
go through the gesture characteristic ol
Mr. Baker when much excited, accom
panying them with certain declarations
of his own. This would be greeted with
ft laugh and corrections would be made.
To another man another reporter would
say that his remarks had been criticised
by some one who mini iced his gestures and
who gave out the impression that the old
gentleman had made a goose of himself,
and the reporter would indulge in some
extravagant gestures characteristic of the
speaker. This would be followed by an
indignant denial and by a hasty state
ment of what he did say. Working in
this way the seven men before midnight
had by comparing notes and observations
written out a pretty fair report of what
occurred inside the hall,
straFshots.
It is estimated that there are more
than 50,000 families in London with only
one room each to live in.
Nearly 75 per cent, of the inmates
in the New York city insane asylum, ac
cording to Superintendent MacDonald,
are foreign born.
The best salary in the world, accord
ing to age, is that of King Alfonso, of
Spain. The young monarch is fourteen
months old and is paid $1,500,000 a year.
De. Dollinger, one of the founders
of the old Catholic movement after the
declaration of the Pope’s infallibility, is
now more than 80 years old and in very
feeble health.
The National Bureau of Statistics
shows that on the $700,000,000 which
annually passes into the tills of the re
tailers of intoxicating liquors in this
country there is a profit of 138 J per cent.
The ladies will be interested to know
that the bustle is of Persian origin.
Nott, in his notes on the “Odes of Ha
fiz,” defines the “refaight” as a kind of
bolster which the ladies fix to the under
garment to produce a certain roundness
thought by them to be becoming.
Many People Refuse to Take Cod
Uver Oil on account of its unpleasant taste.
‘This difficulty has been overcome in Scott’s
Emulsion of Ood Liver Oil with Hypophos
phites. It being as palatable as milk, and the
most valuable remedy known for the treatment
of Consumption, Scrofula and Bronchitis,
General Debility, Wasting Diseases of Chil
dren, Chronic Coughs and Colds, has caused
physicians in all parts of the world to use it.
Physicians report our little patients take it
with pleasure. Try Scott's Emulsion and be
convinced.
In one day recently 126 clergymen sailed from

All “Played Out.”
“Don’t know what ails me lately. Can't eat
well,—can't sleep well. Can't work, and don’t
•enjoy doing anything. Ain’t really sick, and 1
really ain’t well. Feel all kind o’ played out,
someway.” That is what scores of men say
every day. If they would take Dr. Pierce’s
‘'Golden Medical Discovery,” they would soon
have no occasion to say it. It purifies the blood,
tones up the system and fortifies it against dis
ease. It is d great anti-billious remedy as well.

Crawford, the Scout, stated the follow
ing facts about himself at a meeting in
Denver, Colorado: Through the intem
perate habits of my father I was de
prived of even the rudiments of an ed
ucation; indeed, when I enlisted in the
army to fight for my country I was
obliged to make my cross, not knowing
how to writs my own name. While
lying wounded in a hospital in West
Philadelphia one of those good angels of
mercy, a Sister of Charity, taught me to
read and write. I had an angel mother,
and when she lay upon her deathbed she
called me to her side, and taking my
hand in hers, said to me: “.Johnny, my
son, you know your mother loves ycu.
I am dying; will you not give me a prom
ise that I can take up to heaven with
me?” “Mother,” I said, “I will promise
you anything.” “Then promise me, my
son, that you will never drink intoxica
ting liquor, and it will not be so hard for
me to leave the earth.” Need I tell you,
my friends, that I gave that promise, and
that I have faithfully kept it.”
“I Feel Bo Well.”
“I want to thank you for tolling me of Dr.
Pierce’s Favorite Prescription,” writes a lady
to her friend. “For a long time I was unfit to
attend to the work of my household. I kept
about, but I felt thoroughly miserable. I had
terrible backaches, and bearing-down sensa
tions across me and was quite weak and dis
couraged. I sent and got some of the medi
cine after receiving your letter, and it has
cured me. 1 hardly know myself. I feel so
well.”

Well, then, why don’t you do something to
bring back the roses to her cheeks and the
light to her eyes? Don’t you see she is suffering
from nervous debility, the result of female
weakness? A bottle of Dr. Harter’s Iron Tonic
will brighten those pale cheeks, and send new
life through that wasted form. If you love
her, take heed.
