Mrs. Laura Jackson, accompanied
by her daughter, left the city on Tues
day last to spend a month with her
sister Mrs. Henry Dunham on Harris
Neck for the benefit of her health as it
has been poor for the last 5 months
We trust her health may be improved
by the visit.
Mrs. -‘Missie” Kinloch, was in th a
city for several hours last Sunday. Mrs.
Kinloch intended to visit friends at
.Bidgeland, but the conductor failed to
stop his train at that point, hence her
visit. HerJSavannah friends were glad
to see her all the same.
We regret to record a very serious
accident to Mr. J E. Hamlet, the pop
ular green grocer and butcher on
Habersham and Charlton streets. It
seems that Mr. Hamlet while driving
up cattle at his pen was attacked by a
wild steer which caused his horse to
become unmanageable and threw him to
the ground breaking his arm in two
places. Though Mr, Hamlet is suffer
ing great pain from his injuries it is
hoped that nothing serious will result
therefrom.
Two notorious characters Henry
Jenkins and John Riley created a dis
turbance on Monday last at Thunderbolt
The first named having avowed his in
tention of raising h before he went.
The fellow Riley armed with a 1 jjpled
revolver got into a quarrel and freely
usedrthe weapon, and afterwards made
his escape. He was arrested on Wed
nesday by Lt. T. Sanders and tin n d
over to a policeman from whom he sub
sequently escaped. These two roughs
ought to be hunted down; and when
caught made to suffer severely for their
conduct.

experienced great difficu ty ;n getting

the ranks of the companies were fairly
filled and the battailion presented a
good appearance, their marching being

After the parade the battalion and
their friends took the Coast Line Rail
road and proceded to the Thunderbolt
Rice Course f r the purpose <4 spend
ing the day. The dancing platform
was soon filled with merry diiicers,

ent companies under command of Lt.

At 3 o’clock Brigadier General W. J
Whipper, was introduced to the large
crowd present and wh » spoke to them

which teemed with solid advice to our
people, was listened to with the great

sis of the same.
The great, f.-ature of the day was the
trotting race for Texas horses for a
purse of 840; $25 for first, $lO for sec
ond and $5 for third with the following

The day was altogether one of the most
enjoyable of the season, and the managers i

real pleasure.
The Shooting Contest.
At the shooting contest on Monday
last between teams representing the
companies "f the First Colored Battal- I
lion Georgia Volunteers the following I

The Savannah Light Infantry and the
Chatham Light Infantry were awarded
the first and second prize, while Private
John Crittenden carried off on a score
of 19 the individual prize.
Arrested for Perjury
The Gospel Aid Association connect
ed with St, James Tabernacle of which
Rev- M’ R. Wilson, is pastor has been i
having some trouble with one of its re
tractory members. The society was or
ganised about two years ago its mem
bers paying 25 cents per month and
has been getting along harmoniously
until a little over*a week ago when it
expelled Mrs. Annie Martin, who is
not a member of the church, for a viola
tion of its rules. She demanded the re
turn of what money she had contribu
ted about $6 but which under the rules
B he had forfeited. She subsequently
caused the arrest of five of tbe mem
bers on a charge of cheating and swin
dling three of whom were released on
bail and the charge against the other
> two dismissed. The charge it is said
J was one of malice and spite, and Mrs.
M -t n has been arrested on flic charge
f perjury and will he requir'd to give
bonds tor a hearing before the Superior
Court. ■
