The Mysterious Murder.
There is nothing new connected with
the mysterious murder near Burnside
on the Skidaway Railroad. The officers
of the law are supposed to be at work
trying to unravel the mystery. One
thing is probably very certain and that
is the ridiculous claim that a Negro
committed the murder because an old
broken musket was found near the
body, may have given the real
murder r many days distance from
the vicinity. It is known that the poor
white men in that and other parts of
the county when they are able to own
any fit earms it is of the ‘old musket”
kind.
This case in some respects resem
bles the Hertel murder •committed
several years ago on the line of the
Coast Line Road. In that instance it
was endeavored to throw the crime on
colored men, two of whom were arrested
and very narrowly escaped lynching.
The only clue the “detectives” had
was that the bloody murder was com
mitted with an axe and that a piece of
white bacon supposed to come from the
Hertel store was found near the scene
of the crime. From this it was argued
• bat Negroes were guilty; as if white
men never had an axe or cared for
■ white bacon.” When the grand jury
met the Negroes weie promptly dis
h irged there being not a particle of
evidence io hold them. The real mur
derers were probably white tramps who
■btaiued several weeks start by the
oily of those whose duty it is to hunt
down criminals.
ASSAULT ON A LADY’S
CHARACTER
<«r Nams forged to a Letter
Attempting her Ruin.
Americus, GA.,Sept. 15, ’B7
Editor Tribune;
I am forced to accede to do some
thing that I have been expecting sooner
ir later. I was threatened by some
>ne member of the Second Baptist
■hurch of Savannah, with an assault
upon my reputation. It is generally
known that for cause, which I will not
mention in print, that I resigned my
position as organist of the above named
hurch. I was told on the 10th of
February that by some member these
words were uttered; ‘‘Never mind
there is a plot laid out for Alice Brown
and when it is carried out she will fall
so flat, she will not know herself.” I
had a call in March to come to this
city to teach music. I circulated broad
ly that I expected to leave in July, but
did not* until the 13th of August. To
my surprise I received letters from
Savannah informing me that a woman
there received a letter addressed to her
husband, broke it open and read it.
The letter bore an assumed name. She
very indiscreetly circulated that the
letter was from me. I will be pleased
to inform her that I never used an
assumed name in my life. And when I
write to any one I never care whether
it is read by the second partv or not! I
■d.’ise the receiver of such a letter,
which was forged to reflect on my gen
eral standing, to be careful, I will re
turn to Savannah as soon as my engage*
ment term expires. I guess those who
plotted my ’ruin are laughing in their
sleeves, thinking that I am humiliated,
but who ever you are you are mistaken.
Parties that informed me of the antici
pated plot will read this article, and I
hope will be induced to give me the'
names when I come. It is so cowardly'
to take the advantage of ones absence
If I should succeed in getting the
names, there will be au example for all
she vipers, as it is they who are doing
the mischief. I only publish this to
relieve the feelings of my family, and
repudiate the misaprehensions of the
better class of people io the city. I will
cuclude by saying, that all the harm
I have ever received was done by the
members of the church that I a
member of.
What will follow will be seen when I
return home. I will inform the Tri
bune later; The receiver of a forged
’ letter from me will oblige me by having
it print'd and sending the bill to me.
Not humiliated bu' provoked,
Alice M. Brown.
