The self-styled “intelligent
colored man” is curse to his
people. He read*and pays for
papers that denounce his race
and will never help a paper that
struggling to elevate the mas
ses of his people. These class
of fellows are however generally
toadies and pimps for white
men.
Kemember that the Tribune is
battling for the rights of the
colored race. If you want to help
in the fight you must subscribe
and pay your mite to help the
cause. We are powerless with
out your aid. If we should stop
publishing the Tribune it will be
because we are thoroughly con
vinced that you do not desire to
be elevated above your present
mean position.
Brutal Assault by Officers.
On Monday last a most brutal
outrage took place on the corner of
Hall and Barnard streets, w h i c h
was witnessed by several
both white and colored. It seems
that a colored woman wa s being
conducted to jail for some alleged
offense, by two jail guards, to whom
she offered some resistance caused
by the manner in* which she was
treated, when she was slapped in
the face, buffeted and kicked bv the
burly guards. It is almost bevond
co m prehen si o n how two men
clothed in the habiliments of the law
could brutally treat a woman while
under arrest. The facts in this case
are vouched for reliable parties and
should receive Some attention from
our vigorous and fearless Solicitor
General. Such conduct on the part
of the officers having charge of pris
oners is a disgrace to humanity, and
it is th.e duty of the higher officials
to see that a stop is put to it and that
those guilty of maltreating unfor
tunate men and women be brought
to merited punishment.
A HIGH DAY IN St. JAMES
TABERNACLE.
Sabbath September 18, 1887 was
a day to be long remembered- It was
Endowment Day, the church was beau
• ifully decorated with all kinds of
flowers and charts, and pictures of Ne
gro leaders of the race, etc. At 11 a.
in. Rev. M. R. Wilson, preached a
very fine and interesting sermon on ed
ucation from Acts 17, 30: “The sin of
ignorance.” At I o’clock the Sabbath
school met and had a fine session; Rev.
Win. Daniels superintendent. At 3
o’clock p. m. the church and Sabbath
school met for services together. The
singing by the school was spl(ynpi<l
The following speakers made excellent
addresses on education: Rev. Wm,
Daniels and Professor M. J Cr.iwford
The gir}s and boys that had the letters
spelling Endowment Day had some
nice speeches with them and r ndered
them to the credit of themselves, teach
ers, parents and school. The meeting
closed with satisfaction to all.
At 7.3(1 p. m., the meeting opened
with singing bv the choir and congre
gation which was very large and fine.
Prayer by Rev. M. M Myers. Rev.
Savoy read 2nd hymn- after which Riv
M. M Myers made a short, but very in
teresting address The next was a
very beautiful and well rendered re
sponsive solo “Cut it down.” As quick
as lightning Mr. R W. White S'licitor
of the Savannah Tribune, took the sub
ject of the responsive solo and made
one of the finest speeches on education
•I ever 'istened to. It has been the
talk of the city this week among all
who heard it; among the very many
excellent things that be said was the
following;
“That there-is a race pride, and love of
unity found and seen among Irish, German,
French and other nations. They show love
and confidence for and in each other They
have and show a fine taste for each other,
for when a Frenchman wants, a wife he
seeks one among his own race and so with a
French lady, but the Negro, what will suit
you? Anything, my friends let us educate,
ourselves and children to think therm-elves
as good as any race or nation upon earth,
l Self-respect, race jpride, unity and confid
I ence are the main keys now to be touched,
' We must read books, papers, men and
j things about us to keep pace with the age.”
The fine congregation was then fa
vored with a very instructive essay on
education by Mrs. Mr. R. Wilson.
Revs. W. H. Hammond, M. M. Myers,
Wm. Jefferson and Savo| were present
and helped. Professor Crawford was
present also, who helped in this grand
work during the day. The day closed
with great satisfaction.

Another Railroad Outrage.
On Monday last another outrage
occurred on tha Georgia Kailroad
upon one of Georgia’s Indies lor no
other reason than that her skin was
not as light as that of the brutes
who ccmmiited the outrage. The
lady’s name in this case is Miss
Rosa E. Lawson a teacher in the
Ne li- ' ille school at Augu-t , Ga.
She was on her way from .Atlanta
to Augusta and, had a Seat in the
ladies’ car tor which she had paid.
The conductor told her to take the
“jini crow’’ smoking car and on her
refusal to do so the fellow telegraph
ed to Conyers a station near Atlan
ta to have her put out. In response
h gang of white ruffians of the
basest sort met the train and forci
bly ejected her. This is the second
crime of the kind in which colored
1 <dieß have been brutilly treated on
railroads within a month, and if
colored men sit idly and do nothing
it will continue* There is no other
class of people in the world that
.would submit to such treatment- The
rascally conductor in this case is
meaner than the tools he employed.
His name should be ascertained and
lie should be brought to such pun
ishment as his crime deserves.
