A short time since Mrs. 11. Selly a
sister of Mr. Alex. McHardy and Miss
C. Morell applied at the 0. S. 8. Co.,
office for two first class tickets to New
York and was reined on the ground
that they had no more room for first
class passengers. It is well known the
ship (the C‘ty of Augusta) sailed on
that trip with quite a large number of
vacant staterooms. This matter will be
further investigated, after which we will
have more to say on the subject.

Education and its Worth to
the Human Family.
AN ESSAY DELIVERED BY MRS M. R.
WILSON AT ST JAMES TABERNACLE,
Sept. 25, 1887.
Education and its worth mny be com
pared to a dollar and its worth to a
man in want, we often *ay that a bird
in the hand is worth two in the bush
es; so may we say that a dollar tn hand
is worth.two not in hand. Again may
we say one thought known is worth two
unknown.
One may ask what is knowledge? we
answer by saying knowledge is power
It has imparted to man the mysteries
of heaven and earth, and even of life
and death, knowledge unlocks the
hidden recesses of the earth, and makes
meu familiar with its mineral and plants
But there is a difference between
knowledge andwisdon.
First knowledge is that which is
known or that which you know, Sec
ondly, wisdom is the right use of
knowledge gained. Knowledge consti
tutes the whole difference between
savage and civilized society, for the im
provements of their condition their
comforts and conveniences of life, use
ful arts and salutary and good govern
ment are the productions of knowledge
School houses are less expensive
than rebelions. It is to me a perpetual
wonder that any childs, love of know
ledge survives the outrages of the
school houses. That man will be a
benefactor of his race who shall teach
us how to manage rightly the first years
of a child’s education. One half of the
time which is now almost wholly wast
ed in dis rict schools, on Engl'.sh Gram
mar attempted at too eariy an age would
be sufficient to teach our children to
love the Republic and to become its
loyal and lifefj >mg supporters.
The old necessities have passed away,
we now have strong and noble living
languages; rich in literature, replete
with hi r h and earnest thoughts. The
language of science, religion, and libe:-
ty and yet we bid our child ten feed
their spirits on the life ol the dead
ages, instead of the inspiring lite ami
vlgoi of our own times. I du n >t object
to clas-ical learning—far from it —But
I would not have it exclude from the
living pi esent. Greek is perhaps the
most perfect instrument of thought ever
invented by man. and its literature has
never been equaled in purity of style
and boldness of expression.
The scholar should study himself, his
relation to society, to nature and to
art, and above all, in all and through
all these, he should study the relation,
of himself society, nature and att, to
God the author ot them all. It would
be unjust to our people and dangerous
to our institutions to apply any portion
ot the revenues of this nation or ot the
States to the support of sect.rian
schools. It seems to me that in this
act of giving we almost copy its proto
type in what God himself has done on
this great continent of ours. In the
centre of its greatest breadth, where
otherwise, there might be a desert
forever, he has planted a chain of the
greatest lakes on the earth, and the ex
halations arising from their pure
waters every day. come down in gracious
showers, and make that a blooming
garden which otherwise might be a
dessert waste. And from our great
wilderness hinds it is proposed that
their proceeds, like the dews of heaven
shall fall forever, not upon the lauds,
but upon the minds of the children of
the nation, giving them, for all time to
come, all the blessing, and growth, and
greatness, that education can afford.
There are two forces in education.
First is that of the local, municipal
' power under our State governments.
There is the centre of responsibility,
’ secondly, there is the chief educational
> cower, there can be enforc'd Luther s
j great thaught of placing on Magistrates
’ the duty of educating children. This
(worth of public education partakes in a
peculiar w. y of the spirit ot the human
mind in it# efforts f„r cut ure. The
mind mus» be free from extraneous eon
trol as possible; must work under rhe
inspirat'Ons of its own desire for know
ledge; a< d while instruct r> and books
ire necessary helps, the lulle>t and high
esc success must spring from the power
of self help.
The best system ofeducati n is that
which draws its chief support from the
voluntary efforts ot the community,
from the individual efforts of citizens
and from those burdens of taxations of
which they voluntarily imp. se upon
themselves Next in importance to free
dom and justice is popu’ar edu<ati>n,
w thout which, neither justice nor free
dom cun be permanently maintained.
I se several text books, get the views of
different authors as you advance in that
way you c: n plow a broader furrow.
The scholar should first study what he
needs most to know; the order of his
needs should be the order of his work
It will not be denied that from the
day that the child's foot fi’St press' s the
green turf till the day when an old man
be is ready to be laid under it, there is
not an hour in which he docs not netd
to know a thous md things in relation
to his body, “What he shall -eat. what
he shall drink, and wherewith all he
shall be clothed.” [Continued next
