1. Who is Dr W J. Gaines, D. D.?
2. What has he - one??
Wesley J G.iir.es was born in Wiilkes
County, Georgia, near Washington, October
4, 1840. He is the seventh son and young
est child of fourteen children that Wi re born

was a memb- rof the M E. Church, south,
and his mother was a Baptist. His mother
prayed to G-«l under a tig tree for the suc

elder, and Gender and builder of Morris
Brown College. His mother’s prayer “Oh
God make this my boy such a man as thou
wilt have him be. make him thy son for
Jesus sake,” Go.l has answered her prayer-
She is in heaven, and her son is here w -rk
ing out his soul salvation, and at the same
time helping to lift np the Negro race.
Those of us herein Egypt know the worth
of this man of God who was not on the slate
of new bishops, but is firmly fixed in our
minds as a worthy servant or instrument in
the hands of God for anv place of honor in
the gift of the A. M E church. Look at
him, then look at his work, the churches he
has built and finished Look at his work as
a presiding elder. Look at Morris Brown
College in Atlanta, Gt., a lasting monument
to him, to the race, and highest of ail to
God- There are others wlu have -Jone grand
work in Georgia, but Dr. Gaines stands
ahead, with something done for God ar d the
race. He like Moses of old. knows what the
Negroes need in Georgia, or God’s people
her-- in Egypt. ' Gaines” is the choice here
on both sides of the river. Wesley J.

of people, you cannot be hid If God is for

JO-JO. WITH*THE DOG- Fa CE.
A Remarkable Human Curio.
Prominent among the special features of s
H rarrett’s New United Monster Shows
which appear here on Wednesday November
23 is the famous protege of the Czar, “Je-Jo,"
the dog-faced Russian boy This human mir
acle has attracted widespread attention
throughout Europe, and he will no doubt du
fdicate in this count ry the interest he aroused
n the Old World The New York Journal
speaks of the prodigy as follows:
“A wonderful curiosity, the dog-faced boy Jo-
Jo from Russia arrived on the steamer City of
Chicago yesterday ’Jo-Jo’ has the face of a
full blooded skye terrier, tiie resemblance ex
tending to tiie dark, round eyes that gleam
ihrough tlie long silken hair which covers ids
face From tiie root of his nose the hair of Ids
forehead is combed up hill, and blends with the
darker hair of the head proper, which is comb
ed straight back over the head, From the top
and sides of his nose, and from the cheeks right
up to theorbiis of tiie eyes, the hair fa'ls down
quite covering tiie mouth and chin.
“Jo-Jo’ is very amiable generally, but he
showed a little of the canine nature for an
instant, yesterday, when a reporter gave him
what appeared to be a fine large banana, but
which fu realty was otdy a batiaua skin cover
ing a lot of fine-cut tobacco. ‘Jo-Jo’ is morally
opposed to the weed, ns uses chewing gum,
however, and fairly dotes on gum-drops
“It was Mr. S H. Barrett’s money and diplo
macy which secured permission from tiie
Russian Government to bring ’Jo-Jo' to this
country, and even sow an agent for the Czar
Mr Nicholas Forster, accompanies the boy’
and will be with him wherever he goes, to see
that he is properly cared for and return to Ht.
Petersburg at i lie stipulated time ”
•’Jo-Jo” will be seen in the main tent of
Manager Barret’s show No additional charge
will be made to see him
