ENCE.
A Notable Gathering of
Distinguished Di
vines In Our
City.
The Annual Georgia Conference
of the A. M. E. church met in Sa
vannah on Wednesday morning
last at St. James Tabernacle and
organized by electing elder J. A.
Wood as president, at whose re
quest Rev. Dr. W. J. Gaines, con
ducted the business in the absence
of the Bishop. There are 173 dele
gates in attendance and the body is
a splendid type of representative
colored men.
Among the distinguished gentle
men from other States and confer
ences, are some of the greatest
giants of the church, viz: Dr. W. J.
Gaines, president of Morris Brown
college; Dr, B. W. Arnett, financial
secretary of the church; Dr, J. C.
Embry, manager, of the Christian
Recorder; Dr. B. T. Tanner editor
of the A. M. E. Review; Dr. W. B.
Derrick the noted theologian of
New York; Dr. W. D. Johnson,
secretary of the educational work in
the church.
Bishops R. R. Disney, of Canada
and J. M. Brown arrived yesterday
and the former presided at the ses
sion, Bishop Brown being detained
in the house on account of sickness.
Bishop Disney addressed the con
ference in very complimentary
terms which was responded to by
Rev. R. Downs statistical secretary
of the conference.
Dr. Derrick delivered a very elo
quent address on Thursday in be
half of colored newspapers and
publications and urged the delegates
to be constant in their support of
these great agents of education and
civilization. In the evening he and
Dr. Arnett spoke to the large con
gregation. Both gentlemen have
earned a national reputation and
their burning eloquence was listened
to with the greatest attention.
This conference is the mother of
the Georgia Conferences and the
work and reports show a most sat
isfactory condition of affairs. The
dollar money and other collections
showing considerable increase over
previous years.
The delegates elected to the next
General Conference which assem
bles in Indianapolis on May 7, 1888
are as follows:
J. B. Lofton, S. H. Robertson, J
A. Wood, W. H. Powell, W. O. P.
Sherman, S. C. Powell, S. D. Rose
burroughs, R. R. Down, J. H.
Adams.
The committee on temperance
reported strong resolutions against
the evil effects of intemperance and
stirring speeches on the subject were
made by Dr. Derrick, Rev. Porter,
of Valdosta and others.
Rev. M. R. Wilson, the earnest
and indefatigable pastor of St.
James church is everywhere at once
in his efforts to promote the success
of the good work and make the del
egates comfortable.
The conference will be in session
until Tuesday when the appoint
ments will be announced. The
various pulpits in the city will be
filled to-morrow by some of the
many distinguished divines present.
