6 THE FOLDING BED.
A Chicago Man Goes to Sleep Under
One—Rescued by Policemen.
[From the Chicago Tribune.]
A remarkable adventure with a folding
P bed occurred a few nights ago to a young
man connected with a leading dry goods
house of the city. The young man re
ferred to lives on the North Side, and
manifests occasionally much conviviali
ty of disposition. He had been mani
festing such quality one evening, week
before lust, ami when he went home was
in a balmy and beaming mood. He hit
the keyhole aotqphow, and went up
stairs to his room. His folding bed he
recognized ns the place in which he was
accustomed to sleep, and he recollected
that something had to be done with the
article to make it ready for occupancy.
He grappled with it. The next morn
ing tin chambermaid entering the room
was surprised to *see that the folding
bed had not been occupied, though it
had been pulled down. She did the
usual sweeping and dusting, and then
seized the bed to lift it back to its place.
Then she dropped it and began a series
of blood-curdling screams, which assem
bled the household. She said there was
a body under the bed. It was lifted, and
the body was there, sure enough. It
was the body of Mr. , ami he was
sleeping like a lamb. He had pulled
the bed down on himself, and had gone
to sleep perfectly satisfied, the legs of
the article of furniture holding it at a
sufficient height to prevent his suffoca
tion. In his dazed condition he had
discovered the easiest way of going to
bed ever yet hit upon.
Still another story in which the fold
ing bed figured is reported from Ellis
avenue. This particular folding bed is
owned by a lady on the above-named
thoroughfare. One memorable night in
her life no sooner had she fairly im
planted her head on the downy pillows
than the pesky contrivance began to
close in upon her. Faster and faster it
moved, and all the stories she had ever
read of people being buried alive Hashed
through her mind. It was a moment
of supreme horror. But. ns the average
woman at sight of a mouse will summon
to her aid a woman’s only weapon—to
wit, her tongue—so did the fnii<Ellis
avenue sufferer bethink her of thin, use
ful ut oft unruly member, and right
lustily did she employ it, too, as her
neighbors can well and truly testify, and
as her husband might also, but for the
fact that it was lodge night, and his
presence had been demanded down
town. Hearing a succession of un
earthly shrieks, tha more venturesome
of the aforesaid neighbors attempted to
get into the house, but not being pro
fessional house breakers their efforts
were signally unsuccessful. Meanwhile
the screams and shrieks continued with
redoubled vehemence, and it was not
until one of the neighbors had called
the police patrol, ami two of Chicago’s
preservers of the peace had broken open
the door and invaded the promises, and
discovered the cause of so unseemly an
outbreak in a most respectable, quiet
neighborhood, that the poor woman was
released from her folding prison, ami
peace gradually settled down upon tho
scene.

’‘So you've got a wife,” said Jones to
a newly-married man.
“Don’t know, don’t know,” replied
the man, with evident hesitation.

sometimes I think she's got me. You
see, I’ve only been married a few months,
and I can’t tell just yet how the blamed
combination is going to turn out.”—

A curious ending of an ancient ven

where, in the presence of the Archbishop,
Perfect and other dignitaries, 670 mem

and received the prelate’s benediction.
The whole population of the vicinity was
present, and later on a barbecue was held,
where ten oxen, seventy-four pigsand

We would be pleased to know of a man or wo

Why should persons cram their stomachs

sicken and debilitate, when such a pleasant,
and sterling remedy as Prickly Ash Bitters
will act mildly and effectively on the liver,
kidney, stomach and Imwels, and at the same
time tone upand strengthen the whole system,
causing headache, constipation, and all such
distressing evils to quickly disappear.

The following words, in praise of Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription as a remedy for those delicate diseases and weak
nesses peculiar to women, must be of interest to every sufferer from such maladies. They are fair samples of the spontaneous
expressions with which thousands give utterance to their sense of gratitude for the inestimable boon of health which has been
restored to them by the use of this world-famed medicine.
John E. Segar, of MiZlctibeclt, Va„ writes:

TREATING TOE DISEASE.
Many times women call on their family physicians, suffering, as they imagine, one from dyspepsia, another from heart disease,
another from liver or kidney disease, another from nervous exhaustion or prostration, another with pain here or there, and in
this way they all present alike" to themselves and their easy-going and indifferent, or over-busy doctor, separate and distinct diseases,
for whii'li he prescribes his pills and potions, assuming them to be such, when, in reality, they are all only symptoms caused by some
womb disorder. Tile phv- ician, ignorant of the cause of suffering, encourages his practice until large bills arc made. The suffenn*
patieut g< ts no better, but probably worse bv reason of the delay, wrong treatment and consequent complications. A proper medicine,
like Dr. Pierce’s Favori! • Prescription, d-iectcd to the- cause would have entirely removed the disease, thereby dispelling all those
distressing symptoms, and instituting comfort instead of prolonged misery.

months I was perfectly cure I, and have had no trouble since. 1
wrote u leio i- to my family paper, briefly mentioning how my
health had been restored, mid offering to send the lull particulars
to any one writing me for them, and enclosing a stamped-en
velope for reply. I have received over four hundred letters.
In reply, 1 have described my case and the treatment used,
and have earnestly advised them to ‘do likewise.’ From a great
many I have received second letters of thanks, stating that they
had comm need the use of ‘ Favorite Prescription,’ had sent the
required for the ‘Medical Adviser,’ and had applied the
local treatment so fully and plainly laid down therein, aud were
much better already.” ’
