THE STANDARD BEARERS TO
LEAD THE REPUBLICANS TO
VICTORY.
* The Republican Convention
L which assembled at Chicago on the
19th instant adjourned on Monday
night last after being in session six
p days. The convention was compos
ed largely of the sturdiest Repub-
I licans in the country. Mr. J. M.
Thurston was elected temporary
chairman, who delivered a strong
and eloquent speech in behalf of
‘ Republican principles. Hon, M.
f M. Ea ,ee of California was elected
permanent chairman.
The auditorium building in which
the convention met, contained be
. tween ten and twelve thousand
i spectators daily, who manifest-
I ed the greatest enthusiasm in the
proceedings.
There were ten names presented
to the convention for the nomina
, tion and each was received with
’ demonstrations of applause from the
f delegates and the galleries. Eight
ballots were taken in all resulting
on the last in the nomination of Gen
Benj. Harrison, of Indiana, for the
Presidency. There were 830 votes
cast, of which Gen. Harrison receiv
ed 544. The announcement of the
votes was received with the
wildest enthusiasm by the
delegates and the great audience
present, bated which fifteen
minutes. There were three candi
dates for Vice-President, on which
only one ballot was taken resulting
in the nomination of Hon. Levi P.
Norton, of New York, which was
also received with great applause.
The nominations are both very
strong ren and the Republicans of
the country have received the nom
inations with great enthusiasm and
the Democrats with corresponding
fear.
The convention has done well in pre
seating to the country such candi
dates. They will certainly carry
; Indiana and New York as well as
i Connecticut and New Jersey. The
1 talk about California being against
i Gen. Harrison on account of bis
I record on the Chinese question is
| the veriest nonsense. The battle
' will be between the protection prin
1 ciplea and the platform of the Re
-1 publicans, and the tree trade dogmas
of the Democrats. The latter will
be overwhelmingly defeated. The
election will result in a solid north
' against a solid south.
It is possible that Virginia may
leave the solid south this year.
The Georgia delegation paid their
respects to Gen. Harrison, at In
dianapolis both going to and return
ing from Chicago, and was most
cordially received each time by the
i General.
The statement that the Georgia
delegation whs refused accommoda
tion at an Indianapolis hotel is not
true. The delegation was royally
entertained by the Harrison recep
tion committee at the Bates’, the
finest hotel in that city.
James Harris, who was convict
ed April 15, 1884 of the offence of
arson, and sentenced for life to the
penitentiary, has been pardoned by
the Governor.
Chas. Voorhees, a Democratic
State Senator of Indiana has declar.
ed in favor of Harrison and Morton
and will take the stump for the
ticket.
A special from Chicago »-ays; that
the labor organization or that city is
6 leased with the platform of the
Republicans, and they express their
determination to vote the Republi
can ticket.

auder Swaine were pin together

journey through lite. These two
young plant received many congrat
illations from their many friends.

the next four months. Mr. E. B.
