Liberia Day will be celebrated on Monday August 27th at Montgomery by a big demonstration by military compan ies from different parts of the State addresses will be delivered by promin ent speakers. Tickets 35 cents, child ren 25. A large number of Republicans head ed by the Union Cornet Band, serenad ed Col T F Johnson the Republican nominee for Elector, on Thursday even ing. Col Johnson thanked his friends for their appreciation of his friendship, and assuring them that he would accept the responsibilitv thrown upon him by his party. The Republican county convention convened in Savaunah at Empire Hall I on Monday last at 10 o’clock a m for the purpose of electing delegates to the First Congressional convention with Capt L M Pleasant in the chair. Af ter stating the object of the meeting, Capt Pleasant wa< nominated for tempor ary chairman and 8 Snelson secret iry. A committee on credentials was appoint ed and the report showed that all of the districts we-e represented. The follow- V ing persons were elected as delegates to the Congressional convention: Col J H L ''j> Deveaux, Capt L M Pleasant, Col Jas Atkins, W H Matthews, Capt J C Sim ♦ffloas, and S Snelson. The following committee was appoint ed to nominate suitable persons for the Legislature: L B Toomer, KN P Irwin Col J Atkins, 8 B Morse. C Nichols, and John Sneed, Capt J C Simmons, A H Gaston, J E Whiteman, Col J H Deveaux. The following committee to suggest plaee to nominate Senatorial ticket: G A Davison, W H Matthews, John Sneed John Bryan, S B Morse, and L B Toom er. Riyal command ing tendered a complinn nt»ry ser nade to the new elected first Lieutenant H.N. W alton, and second Lieutenant Craw ford Bryant on Thursday niuhc last. Ihe company with a large number of friends met at the armory ab< ut 9 o’clock headed by the Union Cornet band they proceed, d to the residence of Lt. Walton, on Hall street, when af ter the band -played several excellent airs Capt Royal stepped to the front and addressed his new < fficers with a capitol little speech; after which the company and friends were invited in to partake which the boys did ia a soldierly man ner. Addre.-ses were de'ivered by Lt. L. .A. Washington and L. B. Toomer complimenting the company on their selections and wi.-hing them success in the future. Messrs. R. L. Gibbs, R. W, Johnson, Jr., and M. W. Branham de serve credit for the excellent manner in which they conducted the bountiful sup ply of refreshments which was tendered the ‘‘boys” by the hosts on the occasion After leaving Lt. Walton, they pro ceeded to Col. Deveaux’s residence and serenaded him. The Colonel was nu s ing a sick ‘ baby” at the time and was suffering much, but nevertheless, he ap peared on his balcony and addressed a few words of good advice to his military friends, assuring them of his hearty wishes for their future success. Republican Congressional Con vention. The Republican Bongressional eon" vention of the first Congressional dis* trict, met pursuant to call on Wednes day last at Empire hall in this city Chairman Pleasant celled the conven tion to order and read the call when on motion Rev Floyd Snelson was called to the chair and Prof 8 B J/orse as secre tary. Committee on credentials was ap pointed and being out a shoit time re ported a maj .rity of the counties repre sented. The following committee was appoin ed to select candidate tor mem ber of Congress, Elector and Chairman o the Congressional Committee: J H Djvoaux, J R Wells, W H Watson, J W Lee, J W Searles, A LeConte.
