i ' Assault.
On . r. J v night last a most cowar I
ly assault was made op a peaceable and
innfir .s ve c 1 Ted mao named Be”
Harris bv tw- white roughs named
Edward Riley and P Connors, while o >
his wav home. The assau't took place on
Sou 1; Rrotid street near the police bar
rack-, The cries of Harris brought Mr.
J. E. V’hiteman and Philip Smail, to •
his rescue in time to save his life as the ,
devili ii brutes had knocked him down
and was stamping him in a pitiless man
ner. Policeman Masters came up a few I
minus ,s after and with the usual zeal of
some • f our alleged guardians of the
peace, proceeded without understanding
the vise to arrest Small, who
had accompanied Mr. Whiteman to the
rescue A very vigorous protest from
Mr. V> lineman brought him to a realiza
t’OD of his duty and the two white
roughs w. re taken in Harris was taken
home in an almost helpless state. The
roughs Kiely and Connors were fined
830 or lurty days on the chain gang by
acting-Mayor Schwarz on Monday in the
police court. The offence committed by
these desperadoes was most unprovoked
and Mr Whiteman deserves credit for
placing them in the clutches of the law.

F. KI g, proprietor of the premises
on the corner of Jones aad Price streets
had J. F. Myers who kept the store ar
rested on Thursday last, on suspicion of
having stolen about 8350.00 from the
safe in a room adjoining the st re.
Shortly after the arrest the conduct of
a little i.hite ’noy living near the store
was such is to direct attention to his ac
tions, tn fact be having been discover
ed wi h a surplus of the filthy lucre in
his p> esiou.
Under some short questions .'row con
stable Wetherhorn, the embryo than*
cier acknowledged the crime and c<>n
fessed to having taken the “sugar” at
an opportune moment. He then con
ducted the officer to a place on Charl
ton street where he had buried the
money, and it was restored to the owner
minus some S3O. Myers feels very in
dignant at his arrest. A suit for dama
ges is talked about.
It will be recollected that Judge
Harden sent a colored boy to the chain
gang ior six months for stealing two
peaches Now we will bet a bright pro
teclioi; i-rbiem against the wretched
free trad" bandana that nothing will be
done with the youthful Jack Sheppard
in this case.
