Wednesday night last was well attended
The committee of fifteen which was ap
pointed at a recent meeting are actively
at work. Mr. Lem Wade has been ap
pointed treasurer of the committee.

A card from Prof. R. R. Wright
states that the recent freshet at Augus
ta sent the water up about seven feet in
the office oi the Sentinel, and consequent
ly that paper will not be issued for two
weeks. Most oi the office type is lost
which will have to be replenished.
Michael Lavin one of our oldest and
highly esteemed citizens died at his
in this city on Wednesday
12th iust, Mr. Lavin was in the 63rd
year of his age, and served as alderman
for a number of years. He was highly
respected by all who knew him as a man
of strict business integrity.

publican committee of Liberty county

The Jury Commissioners have com
pleted their work. It is stated that
eleven page? of the jury bo >k is requir
ed for the names of the grand jurors.
How many colored men’s names will be
drawn from that number is the question
daily asked of us: time will only tell.
The traverse jurors now numbers ac-
* cording to the new appointment 5377,
therefore we can safely hope that there
will be more than four or five colored
men drawn on the next jury.

The Republican county convent! n
of Liberty met at Hinesville yesterday
for tho purpose of nominating a candi
date for the Legislature. At 12 o’clock
m., the convention was called to order
by Rev. Floyd Sue Lou, the county chair
min pr-'Seut nominee for Congress of
’ this district, F Grant Sneisou was elec
ted secretaiy. The chairman then call
ed upon Rev, Miller to invoke divine
presence and tender guidance, after
which the chairman stated the object of
the convention, but by c >mmon consent
the invited speakers of the dtv wore
first called for and heard gladly. Col.
J H Deveaux of Savannah re ponded
first and his addiiss c nceruiug nati-mal
and state politics was so able and mast
.eriy that it evoked hearty and coii'miial
applause; after which C.ipt. L M Piea--
arnt of Savannah, styled on this occas
sion “The Little Baby” followed, amid
aughter and cheers, who made stirring
remarks upon our relationship to the is
ues of the day.
Two proposed candidates then
made honorable withdrawals < from the
field and pledged hearty support to
whomsoever the people might chot se.
Majority rule was adopted fur conduc -
ing the nomination; after which lour
gentlemen were put in nomination, and

“Olivette” at Ford’s Opera
House.
Savannah received a rare treat this
week in the rendition of the comic opera
“Olivette” by a company of home ama
teurs under the management of Prof. A.
O. Carter. Following is the cast of
characters:

“The Opera of‘Olivette’ refers to the
approichin™ marriage of the Semshai’s
only daughter Olivette, who has just re
turn from the convent. Her father,
unaware of his daughter’s attachment
lor Valentine, demands that she shall
marry the Old Sea Captain DeMerrimac
whom she avers to despise. The day set
for the marriage having arrived, the
captain i< ordered to s >a, much to his
disgust, and greatly to the relief of Oii
vettee, who now det rmined to form a
plot sos the purpose of wedding her
true love, Valenttue.
When DeMarrinnc had sailed on his
tour, Valentine dons a suit personifying
his charactei and claims to to have re
turned from his trip. The father rej ic
ed at this seeming fact, gives his daugh
ter’s baud m marriage to Valentine, who
by all the villagers is greeted as Capt.
De Merrimac,
After a lapse of three months, the
real captain returns and then the plot
is discovered, much to the discomfiture
of the father, and the old captain, who
is recommended to marry the sea ’’
The performers were all well up in
their parts, and Miss Miller os “0 i
j vette” won the encomiums of the audi
| once, displaying most admirable histrion
I ic qualities. She was ably sustained by
Mr Walton as Valentine. The other
principal character- the (’ounces- by
Mis. Camptield ami Duke by Prof. Ross
, were well rendered The r<-mainiug
characters were in keeping with the
I leading ones and the chorus was excel
j lent. 1 he company is to be congratulated
l-n their first effort. The play will be
j repea'ed shortly for the benefit M' the
