was successful by majorities ranging
from 682 to 1369.

is one of the richest colored women
in America. She owns the finest
barber shop in the world, and her
property is valued at $300,000.
Col. Buck. Chairman of the Re
publican State Central Committee,
, thinks the Republicans of Atlanta
will put a ticket in the field for
municipal {honors, and that their
' chances for success is excellent.
The Democrats of New York
citv have divided on their municip
al ticket. Tammany Hall have num
inated Hugh J. Grant as their can
date for mayor, and the county De
mocracy have nominated Abram S.
Hewitt.

The Republicans of the First
South Carolina District, have nomi
nated Capt. S. W. McKinley as
their candidate for Congress from
that district. “Sam” would make
an excellent Congressman he is a
bold and fearless Republican and
his many friends on this side of the
river wish him success on Nowiu

“The man of Luck’’inspires Re
publicans neither with terror nor
awe—scarcely with respect. Hi*
rampant free trade theories they
repudiate, his ignoring of genuine
civil-service reform shocks them,
bis repudiation of bis own doctrine
ot opposition to a second term ama
zes and disgusts them, and hi- super
cilious treatment of the soldiers who
fought to preserve the Union
anger* them. But none of those
peculiarities of the unn tenih
them. J’iihv me not. until that way!

THE REPUBLICAN PARTY
STANDS.
w e re-affirtn our answering da
votion to the national constitution,
and the indissoluble union of the
States under the constitution; to
the personal rights and liberties of
citizens in all the States and Terri
tories in the union, and especially
to the supreme and soverign rights
of every lawful citizen, rich or poor,
native or foreign born, 1 white or
black, to cast one free ballot in pub
lic elections, and to have that billot
dulv counted. We hold the free
and houe-t popular ballot and the
just and equal representation of all
the people to be the foundatii-n of
our republican government, and
dem Hid effective legislation to se
cure the integrity and purity ol
elections, which are the foundation
of public authority.
We charge that the present ad
ministration and tiie Democratic
majority in Congress oWu their ex
istence to the suppression of the
ballot by a criminal nullification of
the constitution and laws of the
United States.
•
Every Neg;o in order to become
conversant with the affairs of his race
should read newspapers devoted to
his own interest. Every civilized
’ race on the face of the earth has a
peculiar interest in the hucc’S.h of his
pe uliar race. Consequently there
are organs to represent almost eve
ry nationality in the United States.
Tiie Irish, German, French, Swede,
Norwegian, Scandinavian, Bohemi
an and other races are staunch sup
porters of papers. The Negro race
is not void of this instinctive faculty
They have a pride that is equalled
only by theii desire to learn, and as
the press is recognized as the uni
versal educator’ they are not reluc
tant to put forth every effort for its
promotion and prosperity. The old
chestnut the Negro journalism is a
very doubtful enterprise is fast be
ing consigned to the dreary shores
of never more. —Ex.
The Democratic National Cam
paign Committee have sent out
circulars t-ssessing all office holders
in the United States for money to
help elect Cleveland. The army
and navy officer-, and the police of
Washington have all been assessed.
The President set an example for
them by contributing §IO,OOO One
third of his annual sal <ry. Refusal
to pay up will be followed bv
prompt dismissi il from the service
of those in civil department. Armv
and navy officers will be made to
feel the politicians powers in a dif
ferent way. 'Such is Democratic
civil service reform.
The Democratic executive com
mittee of thia county s investigat
ing an alleged case of disloyalty to
their late county legislative ticket.
It would not be out of place for a
certain Republican club to investi
gate the treachery of some of its
members at the last election.
Traitors must learn that their
proper place is in the ranks of ti.e
enemy.
