The local politicians are now actively at work laying their plans for the ensu ing January elections. The Timet attempted to burlesque the recent grand Republican demonstra tion, but our friend (?) fell short of his mark. Col. Deveaux has received from the Governor the commissions of the recent ly elected officers of the Chatham Light Infantry. Willie Wingard, the small white boy who killed his step-father last summer, and was sentenced to the peutVntia-y for four years, was pardoned by the Governor on Thursday last. Services will be held at St. James Tabernacle, Rev. R. B Bailey, pastor to-morrow at the following hours: preeh ing by the pastor at 11 a. m., 3 p. in. puv 7 p. m. Sunday School at 1 p. m. Henry Saffold, formerly of Company E. 135 Regiment U. S. C. T. is apply ing sot a pension aud needs identifica tion. He is now residing at Penfield, Ga. He knows the toileting men and would like to hear from them : Joshua Hull, Thomas Smith, Jasper Hayes, Osborne Boler, Sam Eungin, Raif Stra iner, Harrison Strain. Lavin, son of the late M, Lavin deceased, publishes"a card this week to which we call special atten tion. We have 'seen the plans for the new building Mr. Lavin will erect where the old store now stands. The building will be>n ornament to that vicinity. The business of the house will be conducted jfor the pre ent it the corner of York and East Broad streets, where Mr.'Lavin will be glad to see all of his father’s old friends. Rev. J. J. Coles of Africa, is in the city slopping with Rev. Rev. E. K. Love. He is endeavoring to raise money to return toj Africa. It is hoped that the friends of Africa will liberally con tribute to this cause. He will preach at the First African Baptirt church on Sunday at 11 a. m. and Thursday night next. It is hoped that he will lecture at Congregational Church on Tuesday next Savannahians have always done their duty to just worthy causes, and we have do doubt that they will respond! liberal ly to this cause. Rev. E. K. Love pres ident of the foreign mission convention of the United States of America is do ing all in his power to make Rev. Coles’ work a success in Georgia. THE GRANDEST DEMONSTRA- TION EVER WITNESSED IN SAVANNAH. The grandest demonstration ever wit nessed in Savannah took place on Wed nesday night last. The victory achieved by the Republican party; the triumph of honesty over corruption, and the cer tainty of legislation that will bring about an opp> rtuuity for Republicans to cast their ballots and have them hon -s - ly couu el were so intense among the masses of our people t int it culminated iu the greatest ow burst of enthusiasm our city has ever witnessed. The thousands of Reoublicans as sembled promptly at 8 o’clock at the corner of South Broad Mid East Broad Streets, where they were speedi y form cd into line by Assistant Chief Marshal R H. Bourke and bis able corps of as sistants The procession was headed with a brass b ind, followed by a carriage coma ning Chief Marshal L. M. Pleas ant. Rev. F. Snels <n. the Republican candidate tor Congre-s; first Assistant Chief Marshall J E, Whiteman, and Col. J. H. Deveaux; a second carriage contained Prof. S. B. Morse, Capt. J, C. Simmons, and Judge W. H. Matthews. There were one thousand torches in line, with a hundred transparences with appropriate mottoes gb ryfying the great victory achieved by Harrison and Mor ton. The route of the procession was South Broad to Lincoln to Broughton to West Broad to South Broad to Dray ton to the park extention. The turn out was undoubtedly the largest ever witnessed in Savannah. Wh<-n the head of the column had left West Broad and reached Barnard street on South Brond the rear h-d just left Lincoln on Broughtou. When the column reached Jones street the Georgia Artillery com menced the firing of thirty eight guns which carried the enthusiasm of the people to the highest pitch. A stand had been erected in the park extension tor the speakers. The meeting was opened by Prof. Morse the chairman in troducing Rev. J. M Simins wAr offer ed prayer. The Professor than made an eloquent address and concluded by in troducing Rev. Snels n who delivered an able address which was receiv d with deafening cheers Short speeches were also made by Col. Deveaux, Capt, Pleasant, Judge Matthews and Rev W. H. Styles' It is estimated that there were at least 20,000 people on ihe ground. It is greatly to the credit of our people that nothing happened to mar the celebration. A telegram <f congratulation was sent to General Har rison in behalf ofthe assembled multi tude. The great demonstration will long be remembered with pride by the color ed people of Savannah.
