THE Augusta Sentinel asks; ‘’win !D can’t Augusta have a grand r t fica » tion.” Unite brethren and you I Can have one similar to the grand I rally held by the Republicans of ‘‘ this city on the 14th inst. The People’s Choice prophesies that in 1892 “The contest will be f between the Republicans and Pro hibition parties.” Why. what will become of the Demi’s. Bro. White r Do you mean to say that (hey h.<v< t from the field, o i ; s < Mr. Richard S. Frances, a prom i inent colored citizen <*f Washington D. C., diad in that city on the 10 h 8> nst. Mr. Francis was respected 10 W all who knew libn. Atone time a, b bad charge ot the Sriimt-’s res ce wrant, and had nc<uinul<r»'d con p. ler able estate. | - IThb colored men of Washington, so J C., have started a savings bank re tfider the name and title of the f Japitol Savings bank, and have ? i t ~ho»eu Win. Waring, Esq., kb presi - es oiit and Col. M M. Holland, as n Cashier. We wish the enterprise all the success possible. The breaking ol the solid South by Gen. Harrison in the recent cam paign, has raised a very important question, viz: “What will the result be.” We claim not to be prophets, but looking down the line of the future, aud after a little study on the subject, wa venture to say that the Southern Negro is forced to cast bis vote against his wishes is at ar end. and will redound to much good to the Negro race. Every colored person engaged in an honorao*e and useful business should be well supported bv color ed people. The success of individ uals of the race will result in the good of all. Colored people, as a rule, do not look at .this matter in the rig. it light; but if they will ob ♦ serve the workings of this principle with the Irish, .lew and German nationalities, they will discover thwh their success is chiefly due to tbit r»ile of helping each other. Race pride is as necessary to suceaa a national pride and patriotism—Ne gro World: A Edituß Tribuie; Dear feir; —The commanta of the Savannah News and Evening Timas has sought to cast anjust reflections upon us as a people, ever since the night of the Harrison and Mortou celebration The arrest of Edward Jackson for the shooting ot Eagan, was made the pretence for continually publish ing what they call the lawless con duct of the Negroes. Even the Jackson—E.igan episode they are u-itig to prosecute more men than are guilty. Tie idea of issuing warrants lor four men ’imply be cause they ware in comp-niy with Jackson at the time, shows that it is persecution and not a vindication of the law which is desired. Those men did not do anything to be ar rested for. If they did, a learned jurist like Mayor Lester would never have turned Wilson loose. We think if the courts weie more liberal as to when selectiug jurors there would not be so great a desire to c»st colored ruen in court; but wirb the knowledge that a white jury is more likely to heleive a white man than aiolored. They hasten thus to take revenge. Our demon stratum was as quiet ns anything ot the kind that ever pissed through the streets of Savannah, with the exception that a white uimi tried to break into the ranks, and that white man on the corner of West Broad and Margaret Sireefs.firing at us yet we did not seek to pros.-cute them.Whv do they prosecute at all if not for revenge on the four innocent colored men that was with Jackson. L» that showing friendliness towards us as a race ? I tail to see any other motive, but malice. As it is, the News and Times have been kind enough to run the Democratic »ampaign, are they now trying to run on is tor us. They have even kind enough to dictate who shall fill ihe office*. I hope thsy will dictate moderations toward us in the future.. Yours, W. fl. Matthews.
