JOE LOUIS IS THE
WORLD’S LONGEST
TITLE HOLDER
CHICAGO, Ooct. 7 iANPi —
Although now' serving in the
armed forces, Joe Louis has be¬
come the world’s longest heavy
weight boxing champion. He,
according to official boxing rec
ords, has topped Dempsey’s ten
ure as titleholder by heeping
the crown for seven years and
three months.
Since winning the champion¬
ship here in 1937 from Jim Brad
dock, Louis has established the
reputation of being always
ready to fight all comers. Rec¬
ords disclose that he has placed
his crown on the line 21 times,
which is 15 times’ more than
Jack Dempsey.
The list of Joe’s ring oppo¬
nents is too long for him to re¬
call by memory and probably
none of them impressed him ex
cepii Tony Gallento and Billy
Conn, who, a few think. Would
have captured his title if tire
war had been delayed, while the
majority believe that they only
aroused his curiosity by their
cocky confidence or bombastic
manner. While the rest are
definitely inferior to Louis,
there is no reason to assume
that the war is o contributing
factor to his long reign of the
heavies. > ,
Joe made his last ring ap¬
pearance two. years ago. What
army life has done to his fight-
ing ability remains a question,
He is still champion. He will
be champion for the duration
and probably for a long time af
ter the duration, since the cur-
rent crop of prominent heavies
appears to be largely in Joe’s
sroes of having to postpone
their ring engagements until
the end of the duration.

A*blow at the jim crow pat¬

NNPA has learned.
Beginning with adult classes

now includes a private school
for children from six to twelve

or are drawn. A more comp re-
hensive school to teach
ture, economics, journalism and
stress cultural development is
planned also.
The idea began when the
a cultural center, was forced to
discontinue operations. The
only phase of its former work
continued was the King-Smith
playhouse, but thr,t recently
had to be abandoned. A group
of the persons, however form-
ed an organization and brought
in' a new staff Heading up
the new staff were Mr. and Mrs.
David Campbell. They refused
to teach on a jim crow basis.

May 14, several days alter the

When ha did not do so he was
brutally beaten by the sheriff
and his deputies on the next
night, placed in a car and dirv-

and told “never come back to
New Iberia.”
Out of town deputies visited
other prominent Negro citizens
of New Iberia enticed them
from their homes on various pre
texts, beat and run them out of
town. Three Negro physicians,
a dentist, a school teacher and
an insurance salesman were
forced to flee their families and
homes. For several months
