If this swain’s reward was a piece

those days of a pinch of this and
a little of that — it took years of

Buffalo Buffaloed by Amphibian Buffalo ,
GUAM (Delayed)—Amusing incidents of earlier Pacific cam¬
paigns still come trickling in. Staff Sergeant Gordon D. Marston,
Marine Corps combat correspondent, reports this one:
The crew of an amphibian armored tank, clanking ashore ahead
of the assault troops on Guam, heard the order over the radio:
"Get that Jap tank over on the left flank.”
The Marine tank whirled and rattled on through the smoke,
dust and exploding shells. Barely visible was a large, dark, mov¬
ing object.
The tank crunched onward, closing in for the kill at point-
blank range. Suddenly, the enemy tank made a rush to one side.
The tanks crashed and the enemy fell.
The "enemy” was a water buffalo which had survived the pre¬
invasion bombardment, only to fail afoul of its mechanized name-
sake . the amphibian Buffalo armor ed tank.
